I'll Have Another: Horse Doesn't Need To Change Game Plan To Win Belmont 2012

Andrew KulhaJun 1, 2018

I'll Have Another has run two perfect races in a row, so he doesn't need to change his game plan whatsoever to come away with the Triple Crown and the win at the 2012 Belmont Stakes.

I can't believe I'm writing this, but if there's a horse out there that has a chance to win the Triple Crown, it's I'll Have Another.

He looked great at the 2012 Kentucky Derby, but it was easy to write that off as one really good race. He was able to stick with the pack for most of the race and then come on strong at the end to overtake Bodemeister and Trinniberg for the win.

It was a very good race from the horse, but it wasn't Triple Crown-worthy.

Everything changed at the 2012 Preakness.

Not only did I'll Have Another run almost the exact same race, but he looked incredible in the process. Bodemeister came out to an early lead right out of the gate and it looked like he was primed to go wire to wire, but once again, I'll Have Another and jockey Mario Gutierrez were biding their time and conserving energy into the final turn.

The turn came and Gutierrez starting urging his horse to hit his second gear, which he did so without missing a beat.

Right on cue, Bodemeister ran out of steam and I'll Have Another was able to catch up, overtake him and win the race.

It was a beautiful race from both horse and jockey, and it's a strategy that this team should not stray from.

The horse has enough patience and stamina to bide his time and stick with the pack, but he also has shown the power and speed it takes to turn it on at the end.

Doing it once is fine and replicating it at the very next race is great, but is the third time going to be the charm? The Triple Crown is one of the most elusive accomplishments in sports, but all I'll Have Another will have to do is win just one more ironically.

If he runs the same way he has for the past two races, we may just be able to witness history June 9 at Belmont Park.
