Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Junior Hoilett Would Be a Smart Pickup for Gunners

Jesse ReedMay 14, 2012

According to The Guardian, Arsenal are competing with a number of clubs to land the services of former Blackburn winger Junior Hoilett—a smart move that would give the Gunners another talented, young player for next season's action.

Acquiring Hoilett won't threaten any of the current starters, but his presence will go a long way to add to the Gunners' attacking depth.

Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott have their spots on lockdown. Hoilett doesn't have a shot at overthrowing either one, but the Gunners have need for a talented young player for a few reasons.

Injuries Were A Big Deal Last Season

The Gunners were unable to overcome a rash of injuries last season, and there wasn't enough quality attacking depth on the squad last year to overcome them.

It's imperative that Arsenal adds youth and depth to their squad for next season. Hoilett is one of the guys who could be a huge benefit as a stop-gap for any unfortunate injuries or penalties that should befall the Gunners in the future.

Hoilett Will Help Keep Veterans Fresh

One of the most important things for Wenger is to make sure his veterans stay healthy and fresh down the stretch. Hoilett gives him a true threat off the bench to keep in his back pocket for when he decides the time is right to give his starters the rest they'll need in order to stay fresh.

Hoilett is a willing and able winger who is equally adept at passing and scoring, and his presence on the Gunners' roster would give them much-needed flexibility for the long season.

Hoilett Won't Be Too Expensive

At 21 years old, Hoilett hasn't yet entered into the prime of his career. He is still a developing player with much to learn, and as such, he'll be a much cheaper alternative than some of the older, more established veterans on the market.

Per The Sun, Blackburn considered selling Hoilett for £8 million in January, but a tribunal will likely establish his fee at this point.

Whatever the cost ends up being for Arsenal, they must make a strong push to acquire Hoilett's services to bolster their attacking depth.
