Dave's College Basketball Picks, Feb. 1: Penn State at Michigan State

Penn State (16-5, 5-3) at No. 9 Michigan State (17-3, 7-1)

Line: -14

Penn State was able to hold off an improving Iowa team 63-59 last Saturday and has had eight days to prepare for a two game swing through the state of Michigan. The Nittany Lions are 1-2 on the road in conference thus far and have three out of their next four games away from home.

In their first matchup, Penn State outplayed the Spartans by eight points in the second half, but had dug themselves too big of a hole in the opening 20 minutes and eventually lost, 78-73.

It appears that Michigan State has regained its focus following the Northwestern home loss on Jan. 21. The Spartans jumped out quick on Iowa Thursday, leading by 13 at half on the way to an easy 71-56 victory. With Purdue’s victory on Saturday, the league lead is just one game, so Michigan State cannot afford another letdown performance.

Penn State is 10-4 ATS, including 4-2 on the road

Michigan State is 9-8 ATS, including 4-7 at home.

Michigan State is 6-3-1 against Penn State in their last 10 matchups

Penn State is still not being taken seriously. A notch above the Northwestern team that was victorious at the Breslin Center, I see no reason why Michigan State would get its largest Big Ten home margin of victory on Sunday.

Dave’s Pick: Penn State +14
