Mayweather vs. Cotto: Insane Payday Means Money May Isn't Going Anywhere

Eric BallJun 1, 2018

“We can talk, but money talks, so talk more bucks.”

—Jay-Z, “Hola Hovito”

This Jay-Z line off his infamous Blueprint album sums up Floyd Mayweather’s mentality perfectly. The only thing Money May really listens to is the almighty dollar.

Mayweather was talking about potentially retiring after his latest win over Miguel Cotto, and anybody that has followed the antics of Money May laughed hysterically upon hearing this.

Think about it, his nickname is about money. He is the leader of the “Money Team.” He claims his best friend is insanely rich rapper 50 Cent. He brought out millionaire Justin Bieber with him ringside not to look tough (obviously), but to use him for his 23 million twitter followers.

Last second PPV buys was his thought process and it must have worked.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Saturday’s fight raked in $12,000,150 at the gate, good enough for the eighth-highest total in boxing history. Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million for the fight, but once the PPV numbers come out, that total could be closer to $50 million.

All for 45 minutes of work.

It’s always been about money, and that’s why he can light a $100 bill on fire and act like he just lost a penny.

So when he says there is nobody left to fight as the negotiations with Manny Pacquiao continue to go nowhere, Mayweather will find somebody else. The payday is way too high.

At the age of 35, he registered one of the most complete fights of his life against Cotto. He is still in his prime. No way he departs the game at his peak ala Barry Sanders.

Mayweather needs to be the center of attention, and as long as he can still do it, why would he stop?

Look no further than his appearance on the popular MTV show Ridiculousness where Money May was the guest. He didn’t provide much commentary for each silly video stunt, but he wowed the crowd when he brought out a duffle bag containing a cool million. What was the point? To show the 13-17 demographic just how rich he was.

He loves to show off his wealth and as long as he keeps getting insane paydays for fighting twice a year…why would he stop?

He loves the buzz that comes with betting $1.8 million on the Clippers, or throwing down $800,000 on a random NFL preseason game.

Call it conceited, call it a weird hobby or call it incredibly sweet, Mayweather is who he is and will not be vanishing to the background because he can’t fight Pac-man.

Money May is at the peak of his popularity and not even a jail sentence of a stingy promoter will get in his way.

As long as the money keeps talking, Mayweather will keep listening.
