Mississippi State Football: Recapping the Bulldogs' Spring Game

With Sugarland playing after the game, Mississippi State fans came for the game but stayed for the party. Quarterback Tyler Russell provided a party of his own in Mississippi State's spring game.

The junior signal-caller for the Bulldogs was harassed by a pass rush all evening but still completed 24-of-43 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns, according to Brandon Marcello of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. In the process, Bulldog fans got to see legitimate receiving threats emerge in wide receivers Joe Morrow and Malcolm Johnson, in addition to established receivers Arceto Clark and Chad Bumphis.

It's an interesting year in Starkville. Last year’s offense never seemed to click, and the game of musical quarterbacks played by head coach Dan Mullen created many of the inconsistencies seen within the offense. Russell seems entrenched as the starter now, and that might be the last piece of the puzzle for the Bulldog offense.

Junior college transfer defensive lineman Denico Autry capped off his strong spring with a solid performance. Autry is being hyped as one of the top newcomers in the SEC this fall, and FoxSports.com's Scott Kennedy said on Bleacher Report's Full Ride that he has the talent to be one-and-done in Starkville.

Another one of the big questions for Mullen this year was who's going to replace Vick Ballard as the top running back on the depth chart. LaDarius Perkins is the obvious top choice, and he didn't disappoint in the spring game, carrying the ball seven times for 55 yards.

Perkins is more of a speed back, and combined with bruiser Nick Griffin, the Bulldog running game should be in good hands.
