Arnold Palmer Invitational 2012: Win Just What Doctor Ordered for Ailing Tiger

Tiger Woods won his first tournament since 2009, and although he still has a ways to go before reclaiming golf's throne, this was a huge step in the right direction.

After collapses at the Masters last year and Abu Dhabi just two months ago, Woods desperately needed to leave Bay Hill with the trophy. But as a disappointing Saturday jeopardized his lead, it looked like we were headed for another Woods meltdown.

However, he sealed the deal with some solid play on Sunday. He shot a two-under-par 70 to close the door on Graeme McDowell.

What It Means

Tiger's back. Well, sort of.

It was his 72nd career PGA win and his first since September 2009. It should be a major confidence boost for Woods, which is bad news for the rest of the Tour. A confident Tiger is a scary Tiger, and nobody wants to battle with him on Sunday if he gets his pre-divorce mojo back.

However, until Woods wins a major, he won't reclaim that dominant aura. It's been nearly four years since he won a major tournament (2008 US Open).

For Tiger's comeback to be complete, he needs to win a major this season.

What's Next

With the 2012 Masters right around the corner, Woods' victory couldn't have come at a better time. He should be feeling loose and comfortable this week at Augusta.

Woods has won the Masters four times, and all four came after he picked up a win earlier in the year. Two of those came after he snagged the trophy at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He will face a tougher field at the Augusta than Bay Hill, as top players Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald will be competing.

However, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Tiger wins his 15th career major and reclaims his title as the world's best golfer.
