Being popular isn't everything—at least that's what my mum used to tell me when I was a kid.

In the modern world of social status, having the biggest number of followers gives you bragging rights at a charity dinner—one would imagine.

Twitter does things by followers, whereas Facebook likes to pretend we're all friends.

Here are 10 footballers with the most Facebook fans to date.

Mesut Ozil

Perhaps Mesut Ozil is the biggest shock inclusion on this list.

I don't know why he has so many people friending him, perhaps he's just a really nice bloke.

Ozil plays for Real Madrid and Germany.

Ozil is 10th with 4,551,634 fans according to starcountsquared.com.

David Villa

David Villa makes the list in ninth place. He's not an ugly chap, so his placing isn't surprising.

Villa plays for Barcelona and Spain.

He has 4,739,940 fans.

Cesc Fabregas

4,810,594 is former Arsenal favourite Cesc Fabregas' current number.

He'd better be careful, as Villa isn't too far behind!

Fabregas also plays for Barcelona and Spain.

Iker Casillas

Another La Liga player in seventh spot and it's Iker Casillas with 5,109,463.

Casillas plays for Real Madrid and Spain.

Steven Gerrard

Finally, someone from a different league!

Steven Gerrard is representing Liverpool in sixth place with 6,350,118 Facebook fans.

Andres Iniesta

Maybe I should just rename this article La Liga players with the most Facebook fans...

Andres Iniesta is in fifth place with 9,211,007.

Barcelona are representing well on Facebook.

Kaka

Despite having 14,248,465 fans, Kaka finds himself in fourth place on this list.

Crushing statistics.

David Beckham

Ladies pin-up David Beckham is England's most popular Facebook football player with 17,157,016 fans.

Lionel Messi

Second place goes to perhaps the most talented footballer the world has ever seen.

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has some 33,277,079 fans on Facebook.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Seemingly unable to beat Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or, at least Cristiano Ronaldo can claim the crown of most popular footballer on Facebook with 41,484,713 fans.

The picture above shows Ronaldo sinking to his knees after hearing the news.

Afterthoughts

So it all boils down to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as usual.

Is there anything those two won't challenge each other for?

Please note that these figures—whilst accurate at the time of writing—have probably changed significantly since the article has been published.
