In the modern world of social status, having the biggest number of followers gives you bragging rights at a charity dinner—one would imagine.
Twitter does things by followers, whereas Facebook likes to pretend we're all friends.
Here are 10 footballers with the most Facebook fans to date.
Perhaps Mesut Ozil is the biggest shock inclusion on this list.
I don't know why he has so many people friending him, perhaps he's just a really nice bloke.
Ozil plays for Real Madrid and Germany.
David Villa makes the list in ninth place. He's not an ugly chap, so his placing isn't surprising.
Villa plays for Barcelona and Spain.
He has 4,739,940 fans.
Another La Liga player in seventh spot and it's Iker Casillas with 5,109,463.
Casillas plays for Real Madrid and Spain.
Maybe I should just rename this article La Liga players with the most Facebook fans...
Andres Iniesta is in fifth place with 9,211,007.
Barcelona are representing well on Facebook.
Second place goes to perhaps the most talented footballer the world has ever seen.
Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has some 33,277,079 fans on Facebook.
So it all boils down to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as usual.
Is there anything those two won't challenge each other for?
