Serena Williams will begin her quest for a sixth Australian Open title on Tuesday at Melbourne Park. The American will face Austria's Tamira Paszek in the late match from Rod Laver Arena.
Williams' match will follow Lleyton Hewitt's first-round match as he prepares for a test against a talented young player in Cedrik-Marcel Stebe.
The schedule of play for the evening session at Rod Laver Arena is below for day two:
Stebe vs. Hewitt: 7 p.m.
Williams vs. Paszek: to follow
Entering the match, Williams definitely has history on her side from a couple different perspectives.
Firstly, Williams has not lost a match at Melbourne Park since the quarterfinals of the 2008 event. She won the title in both 2009 and 2010 before missing last year's tournament with her foot injury.
Secondly, Williams has never lost a first-round match in any Grand Slam singles event. She's 45-0 in that department, including the majors from very early in her career.
Paszek is a name that will be familiar to fans of Grand Slam tennis as she has done some damage in majors before. She made the quarters at Wimbledon 2011 and she looked like an emerging sensation back in 2007 when she had two fourth-round appearances in majors.
However, she's never done much of anything at Melbourne Park. In making her sixth appearance at the event on Tuesday, she's won just one individual match in the past.
Williams looks great to improve to 46-0 in first-round Grand Slam matches with stiffer competition promising to come later in the tournament.
