Champs Sports Bowl 2011: Bold Predictions for the FSU-Notre Dame Matchup
One of the most underrated bowl matchups of the year is set to take place this Thursday.
It does feature two teams that have underachieved this season, but Florida State and Notre Dame are two of the most talented teams in the country. They're also two elite programs that have a ton of history and success in college football.
It should be a great game, and the winner will have something to build on moving forward.
Everybody has a prediction for the game, but here are some that are bold.
Tommy Rees doesn't throw any interceptions
This is pretty bold because Rees has only went three games all season without throwing an interception. He's still a young quarterback that makes several boneheaded decisions with the football.
Florida State has a fantastic defense that has 13 interceptions, which is tied for 36 best in the country. I just think that Rees is out to prove he is capable of being a legitimate starter for the Irish. He has shown he has talent and leadership, although the mistakes hold him back.
He will limit them in this game.
EJ Manuel has at least five total touchdowns
Quarterback EJ Manuel has had a disappointing season this year, but if the Seminoles expect to win, he'll have to take the game over. Their running game is absolutely terrible, so Manuel will have to be successful throwing the football. The Irish only allow 201 yards in the air, but have allowed 21 passing touchdowns, which is tied for 74th in the country.
The junior quarterback is due for a big game, and it couldn't come at a better time. This would also put him on the list as an early favorite for the Heisman next season.
The loser of the game will have lost it themselves
There's a difference between winning a game and losing the game because you made too many mistakes. A main reason for these teams' lack of success is because of the mistakes they have made throughout the season.
Notre Dame has turned the ball over 26 times and averages 60 yards a game in penalties. Florida State has 18 turnovers and 69 penalty yards, which is the worst in the ACC and 118th worst in the country.
I still believe this is a great matchup and a must-watch bowl game, but expect to see a team continue to shoot themselves in the foot. That will be the loser of this contest.
