FSU vs. Notre Dame: Would You Rather Have Jimbo Fisher or Brian Kelly?

Randy ChambersDec 27, 2011

Breaking down head coaches and trying to determine which one is better is never an easy task. Every coach has different ways of doing things and should be looked at carefully as they coach different programs.

You obviously would expect more from Bob Stoops than you would Mario Cristobal. The difference in talent between FIU and Oklahoma is a wide margin.

This week, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Florida State Seminoles in the Champs Sports Bowl. It's one of the most underrated bowl matchups of the year.

Both programs have elite football programs that are used to winning. They also both had extremely high expectations this year and failed to fulfill them. Regardless, both of these teams are really talented on both sides of the ball and should provide a great contest.

But the best matchup may be between the coaches in Brian Kelly and Jimbo Fisher.

Kelly had done a great job at Central Michigan and Cincinnati before coming to Notre Dame. He won several conference championships and has a 3-1 bowl record. His overall coaching record is 69-31.

Fisher just recently took over the Seminoles after Bobby Bowden finally stepped down. He's 18-8 in the last two seasons and has won his only bowl game last season.

Both coaches have great offensive minds.

Kelly broke several records everywhere he's coached and knows how to get the most out of his players. Fisher has been an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach dating back to his days at Samford in 1991.

They are also very good recruiters that have their program in the Top 25 in this year's class despite the recent struggles of both teams.

Really the only difference between these two coaches is the experience Kelly has over Fisher. The Notre Dame coach has been a head coach since 1991, while this is only Fisher's second year.

Both of these head coaches appear to have their team heading in the right direction, and it's only a matter of time before these programs turn around.

But in bowl games, experience is key, and Kelly has that over the Seminoles coach.
