BCS Bowl Games: Rose Bowl and BCS Bowls That Are Too Close To Call

Tim DanielsDec 23, 2011

As 2012 approaches ever so quickly, that means BCS bowl games are also near.

College football fans are going to be treated to some thrilling games this season as none of the games are projected to be a blowout.

Here are three which are sure to come down to the wire.

Rose: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon Ducks

Wisconsin deserves a lot of credit for bouncing back in the fashion it did. After losing back-to-back games in October, the Badgers ran the table, including a Big Ten championship game victory over Michigan State, to secure a BCS berth.

Oregon might be playing for the national championship if it wasn't for a late-season loss to USC, but they still managed to earn a spot by winning the Pac-12. It's the third straight season the Ducks will be playing in a BCS bowl.

These teams rank third and fourth in points per game nationally, so there should be no shortage of points. It could very well be a game where the team who gets the ball last comes out on top.

Sugar: Michigan Wolverines vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

Denard Robinson is one of the nation's most exciting players, and it's worth watching the Sugar Bowl just to see him play. But the real reason the Wolverines have reached this point is their defense, which stepped up huge in key games against Nebraska and Ohio State to finish the regular season.

Only one team has been able to solve the Virginia Tech puzzle this season, and it's ACC champion Clemson. Otherwise, the Hokies are 11-0. David Wilson, who averaged more than six yards per carry, is one of the most underrated players in the country.

Since both teams are built on their solid defense, this game won't be a shootout like the Rose Bowl. Look for a low-scoring game that's decided by a late field goal.

National Title: Alabama Crimson Tide vs. LSU Tigers

The Crimson Tide knew they needed some help once they lost to LSU the first time around. They got it, and now, have a chance to exact some revenge on their SEC rivals. Alabama was the only team to allow less than 10 PPG in 2011.

If LSU beats Alabama for a second time, the Tigers deserve to be recognized as one of the greatest college football teams of all time. It would be the team's fourth win over a team ranked inside the top three, and nine of their 14 total wins would've come against ranked foes.

It won't be the most visually appealing game of bowl season; the first meeting showed us that, but it should be a terrific game nevertheless. Another trip overtime is certainly possible, which would be as thrilling as it gets.
