The Most Overvalued Programs in Forbes Most Valuable College Football Teams List

Randy ChambersDec 23, 2011

Every year we wonder just how valuable a player is to a program. But what about how valuable an overall football team is to college sports?

Forbes just released their list of the most valuable football teams.

The criteria is pretty simple. It's a combination of the net profit generated by the team, the profit used for academic purposes, value to the conference and how much money the team makes on home games.

While the majority of these teams make the most money of any other program, there are some that are overrated.

Here they are.

Tennessee

1 of 3

Current Value: $82 million
Two-Year Change in Value: 6 percent
Football Profit: $38 million

Majority of this list includes SEC teams but Tennessee should not be one of them. Sure, they have a fantastic fan base, but this team has had losing seasons three of the last four seasons. They haven't won a bowl game since 2007.

The Volunteers have a very talented team that has to pretend it's the 1990s before we call them a most valuable team again.

South Carolina

2 of 3

Current Value: $64 million
Two-Year Change in Value: -20 percent
Football Profit: $23 million

The Gamecocks had a very impressive season this year as they went 10-2 with a tough SEC schedule. But if you didn't look at this list would you really have South Carolina as one of the most valuable teams?

They haven't won a bowl game since 2006 and have been very inconsistent under head coach Steve Spurrier.

Things look like they're improving in South Carolina, but they are probably another team that's overvalued.

Notre Dame

3 of 3

Current Value: $112 million
Two-Year Change in Value: 4 percent
Football Profit: $47 million

Sure, Notre Dame is a great program and they obviously make a ton of money. But what have they done on the football field lately? The past 10 years or so they have struggled to even make a bowl game, let alone fulfill the expectations they have every year.

College football wouldn't be the same without this school participating, but they need to start winning before we begin treating them like an elite team again.
