Jim Tressel Receives Show Cause Order from NCAA, Coaching Career in Jeopardy
The Ohio State State football program received a one-year postseason ban and lost nine scholarships today according to a report from The Columbus Dispatch.
CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman, reports that former coach Jim Tressel was also punished:
"Jim Tressel officially hit with a five-year show cause order that likely ends his college coaching career.
"
The former coach stepped down last spring and is currently serving as a game-day consultant with the Indianapolis Colts.
The situation with Tressel isn't very complex. He was found knowing about improper benefits his players were receiving and it was inevitable that both he and the university were going to be punished.
Before things got ugly both Tressel and former Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor left Columbus.
They were both handed five game suspensions at the start of their respective NFL careers although many found the punishments to be troublesome considering the infractions took place at the collegiate level.
Nobody expected Tressel to come back to the NCAA any time soon, but this confirms it.
Now the former national championship winning coach will have no choice but move forward with his career in the NFL if he wishes to continue coaching.
With the current state of the Indianapolis Colts and the possible sacking of Jim Caldwell and any or all involved with his staff, Tressel may, in fact, find a long term position with the club if owner Jim Irsay thinks he can help.
Although Tressel certainly messed things up at Ohio State, it wouldn't be shocking to see him move up the coaching ranks in the NFL in the next few years.
