College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Prospects That Could Turn Any Team Around

Randy ChambersDec 20, 2011

With the college football season coming to a close, it's about that time to look forward to the recruiting process. Which top players are going where, and which teams can land the most impressive young talent?

While there may be quite a few top prospects that have already decided where they will play football, there are several that haven't. Many of these young men can instantly turn a program around and make them relevant and competitive, or become the final piece to a championship team.

Here are five players that haven't committed yet, but will really improve whichever team they commit to immediately.

DE Mario Edwards

1 of 5

Mario Edwards is one of the top defensive end prospects in the country. At 6'4", 280 pounds, he is not only sure to draw double-teams, but he generates solid pressure and can make huge plays in the back field. He has underrated quickness and plays until the whistle blows.

Edwards has a verbal commitment to Florida State, but has recently opened things back up to look at the other offers he's received.

He's looking at the local schools like Texas, Oklahoma and even Baylor.

Put this guy on any defensive line and it will be that much better, as well as make things easier for the other players around him.

QB Gunner Kiel

2 of 5

Kiel is the top quarterback prospect in this year's class as he has everything you look for in your traditional quarterback. He may lack elite arm strength, but he makes great decisions with the football and is extremely accurate. He is a leader on the football field and has underrated mobility which buys him extra time in the pocket.

The 5-star recruit was committed to Indiana, but backed out after he wanted to explore more of his options. He's also interested in Vanderbilt, LSU, Georgia, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, among others.

Whichever school picks him up will have a top quarterback on their roster, and will improve their team instantly.

WR Stefon Diggs

3 of 5

Diggs is a versatile athlete that can play wide receiver or cornerback: That alone makes him extremely valuable to any team.

He may be small at 6'0", 185 pounds, but he is extremely fast and one of the top playmakers in this year's recruiting class. He could even make plays on special teams and really flip the field position.

Diggs was interested in Florida, but nobody is so sure now that offensive coordinator Charlie Weis has left. He's also interested in California, Auburn, Oklahoma and Michigan, among others.

Regardless of which lucky team he plays for, they will have one of the most explosive players in the country on their roster.

OT Arik Armstead

4 of 5

Armstead is the top offensive lineman prospect in the country—and at 6'8", 275 pounds—he should be. The kid is huge and has tons of upside to become one of the best lineman in all of college football. With his quickness and the way he's able to dominate his opponent, he may also move to the defensive side of the ball.

Of course he has all the offers from the top programs like Notre Dame and USC, but he also has an interest in California, which he recently visited.

Armstead will likely want to play basketball as well, so, picture him on a school like UCLA—who also extended him an offer.

WR Dorial Green-Beckham

5 of 5

I really love this wide receiver as he's 6'6", 220 pounds. All you have to do is throw the ball up and he will use his gigantic, athletic frame and go get it. He is the ultimate deep threat, and has everything you look for in a wide receiver.

He will be a top player whichever school he decides to go to.

While he is considering big schools like Alabama and Notre Dame, he is also thinking about staying at home in Missouri. Put him on the Tigers and they won't just be competitive next season, they'll become a top dog in the Big 12.
