2011 Bowl Games: Baylor and the Scariest Teams in Non-BCS Bowls

T.J. McaloonDec 20, 2011

These three teams all had a chance to make a BCS bowl game this year. However, they were passed over by the BCS bowl selection committee. Instead, we will watch these teams put a beatdown on their opponent in their non-BCS bowl game.

Baylor Bears

The Baylor Bears come into this bowl season as one of the hottest teams in college football.

If it weren’t for two straight losses in the middle of their season to Oklahoma State and Texas A&M, they would have won the Big 12 and would be playing in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. However, Baylor finished their season with a 9-3 record and head into the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Washington Huskies.

This Baylor team comes into their bowl game winning their last five games, while scoring 40 or more points in four of those games.

The Baylor offense should not see a lot of resistance against a Washington defense that ranked 99th in the NCAA giving up 33 points per game.

The Valero Alamo Bowl will see this Baylor team, led by their Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, destroy Washington in front of their fans in San Antonio.

Boise State Broncos

Boise State finished their regular season with only one loss and 11 wins. However, because of playing in a non-BCS conference, they are punished by the BCS selection committee by not getting selected as an at-large bid.

Instead, Boise State will play the 6-6 Arizona State Sun Devils in the MAACO Bowl in Las Vegas.

This year, the Broncos had the seventh-best scoring offense in the NCAA. They averaged 43 points per game, while scoring 40 or more points in seven of their 11 victories.

Boise State will blow out the Sun Devils and their 64th ranked defense. This year, Arizona State allowed teams to score on average 24 points per game. In three of the Sun Devils’ six losses, they gave up 30 or more points.

Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State, is a lot like Baylor, in that they surprised a lot of their opponents on their schedule this year by having a much better team than they were projected.

Kansas State did it with an offense that ranked 30th in the NCAA in points per game with 33.

Before Kansas State’s two losses, they were 7-0 scoring 30 or more points in four of their seven wins.

Since two losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the Wildcats have won their final three games by scoring 30 or more points in two of those three victories.

Kansas State comes into the AT&T Cotton Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks who have an offense that can put up just as many points. Arkansas finished this year with the 15th-best offense in the NCAA, averaging 37 points per game.

If Kansas State can hold Arkansas’ passing attack in check, they have a great chance at ending their season on an impressive four-game winning streak.
