Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas: 5 Things We Learned from the 2011 Shrine Bowl

Randy ChambersDec 19, 2011

The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is one of the oldest and most prestigious high school All-Star games in the country.

It features the top players from both South and North Carolina and gives us another chance to see what these top prospects are really made of.

Last weekend was the 75th Shrine Bowl, and while North Carolina won the game 26-19, it also gave us plenty of things to look forward to.

Here are five things we learned from this weekend's Shrine Bowl.

The Gamecocks Have a Playmaker in Shaq Roland

1 of 5

South Carolina-commit Shaq Roland is the ultimate downfield deep threat, and he proved it in this year's Shrine Bowl.

He was named the SC Offensive MVP as he caught eight passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Some of the catches were highlight worthy as he muscled the ball away for a touchdown and still caught the ball, despite a pass-interference penalty.

Roland still needs to work on his route running, but there are very few players who can go up and get the ball like this guy can.

There Is No Front-Runner for WR Quinshad Davis

2 of 5

Wide receiver Quinshad Davis is a top recruit who has quite a few offers on the table but no leader as of yet.

At 6'3", 180 pounds, Davis is a downfield threat and an ultimate target for the red zone. He can use his size to his advantage and go up and get the ball with the best of them.

He currently has offers on the table from Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Illinois and North Carolina State.

There Isn't a Leader for RB Jela Duncan Either

3 of 5

At 5'9", 180 pounds, Duncan is a downhill runner who will either run you over or blow by you if you're not careful.

His junior season, he rushed for over 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns on just 95 carries. He's also an underrated receiver as he led his team in receptions his sophomore season.

Duncan currently has visits scheduled with Duke, East Carolina and Wake Forest. He also has offers on the table from Pittsburgh, Purdue and South Carolina.

Todd Gurley Is Really Good

4 of 5

Gurley only touched the ball three times for 22 yards in the first half but finished the game with 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 93-yard touchdown run in the first half that was called back due to holding.

He has very good speed that very few on the football field can match. He has great instincts, balance and at 6'0'', 190 pounds, solid size. He's very athletic and a patient runner.

This big-game performance just helps prove that he's the real deal and maybe a little underrated in this year's recruiting class.

He has offers from Georgia, North Carolina, Auburn, Clemson and Virginia Tech, among others.

WR Jamel Harbison Isn't 100 Percent Committed to Minnesota

5 of 5

The Minnesota Golden Gophers thought they landed a solid wide receiver in Jamel Harbison but not so fast.

Harbison who committed to Minnesota a few months ago, may have a change of heart as he may switch his commitment to Vanderbilt.

"It's just a little bit closer to home," Harbison said. "I've talked to my parents about it. I'm going there to check out the facilities. It's a great education there and it's SEC football. And my parents can come down and watch me. That visit is going to be a big thing. I'm not going to worry about football. I know the football is good."

Harbison will make his official visit to Vanderbilt on January 27.
