Premier League Team of the Week: Bellamy, Dempsey, Sturridge and More
The Premier League was not as exciting as it sometimes is last weekend, but there was still plenty of action to digest and more than enough to formulate a team of the week.
Manchester City saw off Arsenal 1-0 in a close match, Manchester United got another clean sheet with a 2-0 win over QPR, while Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw and Tottenham saw off Sunderland 1-0.
Newcastle and Swansea played out a 0-0 draw, and Everton held Norwich to a 1-1 draw.
Fulham heaped more misery on Bolton with a 2-0 win, and West Brom did the same to Blackburn, scoring a late winner to triumph 2-1. Stoke came from behind to beat Wolves 2-1 and Liverpool grabbed a 2-0 win over Aston Villa.
So, with 10 matches having been played, here is your Premier League team of the week, lining up in a 4-4-2 formation.
GK John Ruddy
1 of 11John Ruddy has been in good form this season, and his showing against Everton was crucial to Norwich securing a point.
Ruddy made a string of top-notch saves, but was eventually beaten after a late deflection left him wrong-footed. He kept on making saves after that, including somehow getting an arm to a shot that swerved viciously.
Norwich are likely to retain their Premier League status; continued good form from Ruddy will be crucial to them doing so.
LB Thomas Vermaelen
2 of 11Thomas Vermaelen is proving quite adept at left back as he covers during something of an injury crisis for Arsenal in the position.
He enjoys getting forwards, and left back is allowing him to do that. He was a threat in the box against Manchester City, almost scoring after getting the better of two defenders from a corner.
He also went close with a couple of long-range shots; Joe Hart did well to save one and the other looked to have him beaten, but just crept wide.
CB Rio Ferdinand
3 of 11Rio Ferdinand has not had the finest season so far. It has been suggested that he is past it and no longer up to playing at the very highest level.
While there will be tougher oppositions than QPR, Rio Ferdinand looked to be back to his best against the Premier League newcomers.
He was a dominant force in the air, winning just about everything as he kept QPR's attack quiet. He was also solid on the ground, cutting out threatening balls, winning tackles and getting the ball out to the midfield confidently.
CB Vincent Kompany
4 of 11Vincent Kompany is one of the best centre backs around and is integral to Manchester City's success. The big defender was in top form against Arsenal, snuffing out Arsenal's attacks with alarming regularity.
He did very well against Theo Walcott, outpacing him early on in the first half, and continued to impress as he showed good composure and strength, on the ground and in the air.
Manchester City have a tremendous amount of attacking talent, but none of it would matter if it were not for the defensive qualities of Vincent Kompany and his defensive partners. That was evident against an Arsenal side that was very much in the game.
RB Micah Richards
5 of 11Micah Richards went through a rough patch for a couple of years, but looks to be back to his best and put in a great shift against a rejuvenated Arsenal.
He surged forward with confidence, despite seeming to have a problem with his hamstring in the second half, and created several chances, including a dangerous low ball that somehow managed to evade everyone in the box.
Richards also helped out at the back and made a couple of crucial blocks, notably from Robin van Persie, and his fair share of clearances as Manchester City found it tougher going than they often have this season.
LM Craig Bellamy
6 of 11An assist and a goal for Craig Bellamy capped a good outing for the Welshman as he helped Liverpool to victory over Aston Villa.
He reacted well in a crowded box for Liverpool's first goal, before winning and then taking the corner that allowed Martin Skrtel to head home.
He continued to threaten throughout the afternoon as he made multiple runs down the left wing, constantly looking to beat men and get the ball into the box.
CM Michael Carrick
7 of 11Michael Carrick scored an absolutely fantastic goal, picking up the ball on the halfway line, beating QPR's defence and firing home a well-placed shot to put Manchester United up 2-0.
Carrick helped Manchester United control the midfield against QPR and will need to keep up his good form as Manchester United struggle with an injury crisis in full swing.
CM Clint Dempsey
8 of 11Clint Dempsey returned to top form with a commanding display against Bolton.
Dempsey scored a great headed goal, somehow managing to get the ball into the bottom corner and then provided a lovely weighted ball for Bryan Ruiz to chip home.
He ran the midfield for Fulham, constantly finding space, playing clever through-balls and went close to adding to his tally with a couple of good efforts that only just went wide.
RM Peter Odemwingie
9 of 11Peter Odemwingie was in lethal form on the right wing for West Brom against Blackburn Rovers. The Nigerian international cut in from the right wing on several occasions and kept Blackburn Rovers pinned back with his pace and skill.
He scored a fabulous winner, skipping past two defenders before curling in a great shot from the edge of the box to win the game for West Brom.
West Brom will be hoping to move up the table, and Odemwingie's creativity and goalscoring attributes could be of great use in that effort.
ST Grant Holt
10 of 11Grant Holt is having a great first season in the Premier League. He added to his rapidly rising goal tally for the season with a very well-taken goal.
Holt did very well to hold off his marker, turn him and somehow find room to get his shot off in a crowded box to put Norwich 1-0 up against Everton.
The tough striker was not afraid to throw his weight around as he caused severe problems for Everton's defence with clever movement and an uncompromising attitude.
Holt knows how to get goals, an attribute that will be vital to Norwich's success this season.
ST Daniel Sturridge
11 of 11Daniel Sturridge scored a fantastic goal to put Chelsea 1-0 up, controlling a long ball from Ashley Cole delicately before firing home a powerful shot that was just too quick for the goalkeeper to get down to.
He was a constant threat breaking down the wings with remarkably speed and agility. The Englishman caused havoc on Wigan's left as he managed to find room all afternoon long.
Evidently, it was not enough to secure the three points for Chelsea, but Sturridge created several chances and was the best player on the pitch.
