Knicks News: New York on FA Gilbert Arenas' Wish List

TJ NagyDec 18, 2011

It looks like the Knicks have two options now in the category of "cocky, injury-riddled, free agent guard who's great if he's motivated enough to play."

Free agent Gilbert Arenas apparently has a wish list naming the four teams he hopes will pick him up and give him a chance, and the Knickerbockers are one of them.

The other three teams are the Lakers, Heat, and whatever team Dwight Howard is on.

Okay, so technically there's only three teams total, since I doubt the Magic are going to see this list and realize they made a huge mistake in letting him go. The other two options are pretty solid, though. The Heat and the Lakers both need backcourt help as much as any contender in the league right now.

Still recovering from that whole guns in the locker room thing a few years ago that caused his career to spiral out of control, Arenas is aiming to land a contract with a contender. Although he may not be Agent Zero anymore, he can still go out and be a consistent factor on the court.

Either way, it's nice to see that the Knicks have a solid back-up plan if they end up not landing Baron Davis. Reportedly, NY wants to try to land BD in the next 48 hours. If they fail, Arenas may be getting a phone call sooner rather than later.

For many fans, Arenas may not exactly be the greatest option for New York, especially with his past injury problems, but maybe with some motivation he can find that spark that made him a bona fide star in Washington a few years back.

ESPN's Marc Stein said it best, "Eventually, though, someone will take a chance on an unrestricted free agent who once averaged better than 25 points per game for three straight seasons."

That someone may just end up being the Knicks, and even with a nice little group of guards already on the roster, it's hard to say no to a former franchise player.

So what do you guys think about Arenas possibly in a Knicks jersey? Is he even worth Jim Dolan's time?
