College Football Recruiting: 6 Coaches Recruits Know Won't Be Around for 4 Years

Edwin WeathersbyDec 16, 2011

In this day and age, college football coaches are basically contractors that are always in search of the next best job. Sometimes it's about money, sometimes it's about the conference and sometimes it's about just thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

I'm going to give you six coaches right now that I think recruits have to have at least some idea that it's not likely the coach is there for there full four-five years at the school. You may agree with me, but you probably won't.

Let's start it up!

6. Tim DeRuyter: Fresno State

1 of 6

DeRuyter is one of the flat out best defensive coordinators in America. He dramatically turned around Texas A&M's defense and brought the best out of Von Miller.

Now, DeRuyter will get his HC chance at Fresno State. I just find it hard to believe that after 2-3 seasons in Central California, when Fresno State is back to being a solid program, a bigger job will come after DeRuyter.

I think he'll take it and be gone from the Bulldogs.

5. Paul Rhoads: Iowa State

2 of 6

Rhoads seems to be a big-time motivator as a HC, as he can rally his players to play better than their capabilities vs. big-time opponents in big-time games. If you don't agree with me, then take a look at the Oklahoma State game this year.

Iowa State isn't a powerhouse program and Rhoads hasn't won any conference championships. Yet, circumstances play a role in those factors, which is why you can't fully blame Rhoads.

I think in the next few years, Rhoads will be gone from the Cyclone program to another school where winning is more realistically possible.

4. Dan Mullen: Mississippi State

3 of 6

Mullen has been rumored to be one of the top allures for the Penn State brass. He's done some good things at MSU and many schools have taken notice.

Florida had interest in him when Urban stepped down and Mullen has been mentioned to be linked to some other top notch jobs.

I don't think the Bulldogs can keep Mullen around forever and that could be within the next few years.

3. Charlie Weis: Kansas

4 of 6

I honestly thought Weis would be at Florida for more than one year. I really did. However, he's gone on to Kansas and will try to dig the Jayhawks out of the Big 12 pits.

But KU fans, seriously, if you think Charlie Weis is staying there for awhile then you are fooling yourselves. Weis is said to have learned his lesson at Notre Dame and has been humbled, just a bit.

But Kansas isn't big enough for him and he will be gone within four years to a bigger program.

2. James Franklin: Vanderbilt

5 of 6

I know Franklin signed an extension a few weeks ago, but I think he's gone after awhile. Especially if he can get Vanderbilt to another bowl game or two, some big program is going to come calling.

The Vandy job is kind of a peculiar one, as it's an SEC gig, which is awesome, but Vandy is a prominent doormat in the conference. If Franklin, who went 6-6 this year, can have another couple six or seven-win seasons, he's going to be a rock star around the country and big money will be thrown at him.

1. Guz Malzahn: Arkansas State

6 of 6

If you're a father and your son is being recruited by Malzahn and Arkansas State, you have to know this will be a short stay. I give to two or three years, tops.

Malzahn is going to leave. It's just a matter of where to. He left Auburn just because he wanted a head coaching job, and I think soon enough someone will make him the offer he's been looking for.

He's interviewed and been offered several bigger jobs, but seems to be looking for the right fit at the right time. Arkansas State will be looking for another coach fairly soon.
