LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: Why Jarrett Lee Should Start National Championship Game
If you have two quarterbacks, you have none. That’s the old adage, which, for the most part, remains true.
In Les Miles’ case though, he’s found a way to make it work for the LSU Tigers.
When Jarrett Lee was playing the best football of his career this season, Miles made the decision to incorporate Jordan Jefferson into the offense.
Many thought the move would backfire on Miles and the Tigers, but it didn’t.
The Tigers are playing well with Jefferson, just as they were with Lee earlier in the season. So, is there any reason to shake things up? What argument can be made for Jarrett Lee at quarterback?
The LSU offense was very efficient with Lee under center. He executed a solid short passing game that allowed the Tigers to loosen up the defense.
Jefferson may provide the big play, but Lee was a consistent presence who held on to the ball well before the Alabama game.
Jefferson, in a very Tebow-like way, just wins games, even when he doesn’t look very good. When the decision was made to go with him against Alabama, that’s exactly what he did.
The offense can be hit or miss with Jefferson. Twice since winning the starting job back, he’s failed to throw for 100 yards.
Against Georgia, the Tigers offense looked the worst it has all season. Surprisingly, Miles never switched quarterbacks, despite Jefferson’s 25-yard performance.
In the past Miles has been quick to make a change in an attempt to spark his team. Although this isn’t always the best strategy, it's seemed to work well as a motivating factor for LSU.
Maybe LSU doesn’t have to start Lee, but he should definitely play. Jefferson plays better when there’s competition and he has something to prove. The second he began to receive praise, the offense stalled against Georgia.
Jefferson is without a doubt the closer for this team. He’s shown he can make the plays to win a big game.
But to get to that point the Tigers should consider doing what has served them so well to this point: play two quarterbacks. After all, they both got you here.
