NBA Amnesty: Time for Baron Davis' Second Stint with the Hornets?
As you may have heard, earlier in the week, star Hornets point guard Chris Paul has been traded to the L.A. Clippers.
This article isn't about Paul or West, this article is about former Hornets point guard Baron Davis, who was dropped by the Cleveland Cavaliers yesterday in a cap-clearing move that had been an open secret for weeks.
The two-time All-Star has averaged at least 13 points and six dishes in each of the last eleven seasons. Though he has been hampered by injuries in the past, he still seems like an ideal pickup for teams that have gaping holes at the point. One of the teams that now has a gaping hole is the team that drafted him, which he last played for in 2005.
With Paul gone, the Hornets have little in the way of point guards aside of Jarrett Jack, a perennial bench warmer who has only averaged five dishes a game in one of his six seasons. Jack's best season is not even as good as Davis' worse. They also have a lack of marquee players aside from Eric Gordon, and still have cap space owing to the loss of West.
Davis would also bring veteran moxie to a team that is clearly in a rebuilding phase.
Other teams I wouldn't rule out are the Lakers (who did clear cap space by dealing Lamar Odom, and are Davis' hometown team) and the Heat (who lost Mike Bibby to the Knicks), though I think a Davis-back-to-Nawlins signing makes the most sense.
