College Football Recruiting: Who's Got the Better Class, Ohio State or Michigan?

Randy ChambersDec 14, 2011

With the regular season coming to a close and bowl games only left to play, these next few months will be focused on recruiting. Where will some of the top players in the country end up and which teams will fill their needs with future stars?

The Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes are two teams that absolutely hate each other. But they're also two teams that right now have two of the top recruiting classes in the country. Normally they do a great job at recruiting, but it's even easier with the success that Brady Hoke is having and with the recent hire of Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

Players want to play for winning programs with great coaches and these two teams have that.

But which team has a better recruiting class?

Let's find out.

Michigan Wolverines

1 of 3

Michigan's top recruit right now is offensive tackle Kyle Kalis. He is rated a 5-star player by both Scout.com and Rivals.com. At 6'5" and over 300 pounds, he has the physical tools to become a dominant pass protector for the Wolverines.

What makes things scarier is that's not the only solid lineman that they have. They also added Erik Magnuson and Blake Bars, who are 4-star players. With players like Andrus Peat, Kyle Murphy, Joshua Garnett, Joey O'Connor and Avery Young (among others) still considering, they have a chance to put together one of the greatest offensive lines ever recruited.

Michigan has also snagged two of the top middle linebackers in Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross, and one of the top outside linebackers in Joe Bolden. All of those players are extremely athletic and hard hitters.

Overall, this is a great recruiting class and is ranked No. 2 in the country by both Scout.com and Rivals.com.

Other great players that have already committed include: Sione Houma, Devin Funchess, Tom Strobel, Ondre Pipkins, Terry Richardson, Jarrod Wilson and Chris Wormley.

Ohio State Buckeyes

2 of 3

Ohio State hired the right man for the job in Urban Meyer, because in less than 24 hours he has landed two of the top recruits in the country.

Defensive tackle Tommy Schutt, who is one of the best at his position, switched from Penn State to become a Buckeye, and running back Brionte Dunn, who said he didn't want to play in the spread offense, couldn't avoid Meyer's charm.

He turned down the rival Michigan Wolverines and became a Buckeye.

The Buckeyes also added defensive end Adolphus Washington, who is very quick for his size and a very physical tackler.

Ohio State also landed wide receiver Ricquan Southward, who will be competing for playing time from day one. At 6'2", 185 pounds, he has the size and athleticism to be very effective as a receiver. He is great at picking up yards after the catch and is a valuable return man.

Overall, this is a solid recruiting class and is rated No. 8 by Scout.com and No. 13 by Rivals.com.

Other great players that have already committed include: Se'Von Pittman, Joshua Perry, Warren Ball, Najee Murray, Devan Bogard, Blake Thomas and Luke Roberts.

Which Class Is Better?

3 of 3

Now that we broke down the recruiting class for each team, which class is better right now?

Both are great and will have a huge impact on this season and for the future, but you have to go with Michigan, just because the offensive line is loaded and has the possibility to get even better with several top lineman still considering the Wolverines.

Getting three of the top linebackers is huge, and the defensive line is going to be great with Ondre Pipkins clogging up the middle.

Ohio State's class is also fantastic, but it's not as balanced as Michigan's is right now. Although with the way Urban Myer has landed two top players very quickly, things could soon change.

Overall, these two hated rivals have great recruiting classes, which will only add to the great tradition of the rivalry.
