Ohio State Football Recruiting: Meyer Steals Two Big Ten Recruits, What's Next?

Johnathan CaceDec 13, 2011

Urban Meyer has not coached a game yet for Ohio State, but his impact is already being felt on the recruiting trail. In just two weeks, he has reportedly snatched two defensive linemen, Tommy Schutt and Se’Von Pittman, away from other Big Ten schools.

This is huge for the Buckeyes because their 2012 recruiting class was looking a little thin, especially on the defensive line. Until Adolphus Washington committed on Nov. 22, the team had no recruits on the defensive line and only 14 players total.

So what can we expect next from Meyer? Let’s break down the newest commitments, as well as what he has in store for the future.

Tommy Schutt

This 6’3”, 305 pounder was originally committed to Penn State but reopened his commitment after the scandal involving Jerry Sandusky broke and the firing of Joe Paterno. Schutt could be an immediate help against the run.

He is not particularly good at rushing the passer but he never stops competing and consistently finds a way to make the play from defensive tackle. It is obvious that he has the want to play college football and if he can continue to develop his game, he could become a great defender.

Se’Von Pittman

Pittman is the exact opposite of Schutt. He’s a smaller guy though his weight varies on every recruiting site between 230 and 260 pounds, and is a pure pass rusher. He is a little raw and will likely need at least a year to develop into a consistent threat.

He was formerly committed to Michigan State but his heart was apparently always set on being a Buckeye. Meyer completely changed his perspective.

“For me to leave a coach like [Dantonio], [Meyer] had to be a great coach and a great person too, and everything he told me was what I wanted to hear to be comfortable enough to leave.”

Who Else?

The biggest problem for Ohio State has been finding playmakers on offense, but a bunch of them have already committed to the team. The biggest area of need is at offensive tackle, a position of vital importance to Meyer’s offense and one where no current recruits are projected to play.

The biggest target, literally and figuratively, is Jordan Diamond. He is 6’6”, 295 pounds, and is one of the most consistent blockers in this class. He has plenty of other offers and right now has set two official visits to Ohio State and Auburn.

The other position of need is cornerback where only 3-star Najee Murray has committed. That could be a problem because only A.J. Leggett is a true corner and he was originally pledged to Miami but was told he would get in based on academics. If that isn’t an issue, he could really be an asset for Ohio State.
