Bulls Rumors: Signing Richard Hamilton Would Be an Underrated Move

Tim DanielsDec 13, 2011

Richard Hamilton was waived by the Detroit Pistons and several sources, including K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, are reporting he'll sign with the Chicago Bulls. Although it wouldn't be a flashy move by the Eastern Conference contenders, it would be a solid, under-the-radar addition.

"

The Tribune reported on Sunday night that Hamilton would be waived Monday. Barring an unforeseen claim off waivers, a process that takes 48 hours, the Tribune reported Hamilton will sign a two-year, $10 million deal, likely on Wednesday.

"

Hamilton is a savvy veteran who has been through his fair share of playoff battles. Adding a piece like him to the equation will give the Bulls much more depth, an important aspect of every team due to the shortened season's packed schedule.

He'd also slide nicely into Chicago's void at shooting guard. It's a position which has been filled recently by Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer. Neither player was a major contributor.

Hamilton, on the other hand, would thrive playing under minimal pressure. With weapons like Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer also on the roster, the Connecticut product won't be a defensive focal point.

After 10 straight seasons averaging 17 points or more, Hamilton dropped to 14 last season. While a lot of that has to do with a loss of minutes, there's definitely some wear and tear, too. He's played in the league for 12 years and has never been afraid of contact.

The only concern would be injuries. Hamilton hasn't played in more than 55 games over the past two seasons, but Chicago is more worried about him being a useful contributor in the playoffs anyway. If he needs some time off during the regular season, he'll get it.

Signing him at a reasonable price also keeps the Bulls' options open moving forward. There are still a bunch of intriguing possibilities on the free-agent and trade markets, and the team's front office is making a concerted effort to build a team which can knock off the Heat.

All told, signing Hamilton wouldn't garner the headlines of a blockbuster trade for Dwight Howard, but it would still move the Bulls a step closer to another deep playoff run.

Once a team reaches that stage, anything is possible.
