Arizona-Stanford: Wildcats Lose a Heartbreaker, Jerryd Bayless still Makes History

Sean StancillFeb 16, 2008

Jerryd Bayless was trying to make Wildcat history today, becoming only the second player to score a combined 100 points in three games.  The first and only player to do just that was Damon Stoudemire in the 90's.

Bayless did make history today, scoring 103—but in a loss.

The No.7 Stanford Cardinal survived a late rally by the Wildcats to win 67-66 in the desert.  Brook Lopez nailed game winning FT's late to seal the deal, and had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cardinals.  Lawrence Hill added 13 off the bench.

Bayless had a game high 31 and was a perfect 16-16 from the line.  Teammate Chase Budinger finished second on the team with 23 points.

The contest was deadlocked in the first half until a Lopez jumper put his team ahead 30-28 going into halftime.  The game's pace quickened in the second, as the teams battled back and forth until the very end.

Stanford and Arizona entered into the last 1:30 tied at 63-63.

Next we saw a Lopez jumper and a Budinger trey.  The score was in Arizona's favor, 66-65.

Everyone knew who the ball was going to.  The Cardinal, as expected, threw the ball down to Brook Lopez.  He turned and attempted a turnaround hook when Budinger came from behind and fouled Lopez on the hand.  The call was questionable as it looked like a clean block from several angles, but then again, it also appeared to be the right call from others.

Brook took his time and calmly knocked down both free throws to give Trent Johnson's team the victory.

Budinger had a chance to win it, but was blocked by Robin Lopez.

Even with the loss, Bayless has no reason to feel bad.  He still set a new record for most points scored over a three-game span in Wildcats' history.  Bayless was also dominant in this game, at one point scoring 16 straight for Arizona.

It's safe to say Bayless is one of the best freshman in the league, along with James Harden, Johnny Flynn, O.J. Mayo, Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, etc.

With the win, the Cardinals go to 21-4.  The Wildcats fall to 16-9.
