Khan vs Peterson: Champion Khan Will Keep Momentum in Easy Victory
A part of being a good athlete is that you can't be rattled off of your game when you're in enemy territory.
Amir Khan is about to get that opportunity, when he puts the WBA Super Lightweight and IBF Light Welterweight titles on the line in Washington, D.C. against hometown boy Lamont Peterson.
Khan is 26-1, having won each of his last eight fights. When the fight is over on Saturday, he will be 27-1 and on a nine-fight streak.
It's not that Peterson is a bum. Certainly, a fighter with a 29-1-1 record fighting in front of his home fans can't be taken lightly.
Dan Rafael spoke with Khan and quoted him as saying the following:
"I'm not afraid to fight away from home. We could have chosen to fight in England, or even fight in Los Angeles or [Las] Vegas again, away from Lamont's hometown. But we thought, 'We'll take the fight to him and we'll face someone who's in the top five in the world. We'll fight him, and once we beat him, then there are no excuses.
"
That's the kind of confidence that will push him over the edge. The fact that he suggested that the fight be in Peterson's hometown rather than his own, or a neutral site, takes incredible confidence.
The champion would normally get to choose the fight's location, and that's exactly what Khan's doing here.
Imagine the Super Bowl team with the better record getting to choose where the Super Bowl was played. It's a hypothetical, but go with it. Rather than that team picking their home stadium, or going to a neutral location, imagine that they chose the other team's home.
It would be borderline foolish, but it would tell me that this team knows what it's doing. I am not the only one who thinks that way.
Bodog lists Khan as the overwhelming favorite in the fight. Khan is listed at -1160, while Peterson is off at +650.
Those odds are too high to bet on. You would have to bet far too much to make that pay off. Still, don't bet on Peterson. The odds are decent, but you're just throwing your money away.
Prediction: Khan in an eighth round knockout
