2012 BCS National Championship: What Happens When Alabama Beats LSU?
So what happens when Alabama beats LSU in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game?
Who will truly be the best team in college football? Will it be Alabama or LSU, or will it be another team that got snubbed from the BCS title game, like Oklahoma State or Stanford?
When Alabama beats LSU, there will be a lot of questions the BCS and its rankings won't be able to answer, so I'll help out and answer those questions for everyone.
Let's start with the most obvious question of all: "When Alabama beats LSU, who will be considered the best team in college football?"
An Alabama win over LSU will undoubtedly complicate things in the BCS and the "best team of 2011" conversation, with both LSU and Alabama joining the ranks of Oklahoma State, Boise State and Houston as the only teams with one loss.
And because Alabama, LSU, Houston, Boise State and Oklahoma State will all end their season with only one loss, the best team in college football debate will begin. However, even though Boise State and Houston have only one loss, they don't deserve to be in the "best team of 2011" debate because of their strength of schedule and respective conferences they play in.
The fact that Oklahoma State's one loss came to a 6-6 Iowa State team is enough to remove it from the debate, only because Alabama and LSU's one loss (against each other) will both come against No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams, respectively.
Based on the closeness of their Nov. 5 matchup, the debate of the better team is between Alabama and LSU and it will ultimately come down to who gets outplayed in the BCS title game.
While I don't think Alabama or LSU will exorbitantly outplay the other, I do think Alabama will come out on top because of one player on its roster. That player is wide receiver Marquis Maze.
If Alabama wants to outplay the LSU Tigers and earn some serious credibility in the "best team of 2011" talk, it must surprise the Tigers by coming out and running the Wildcat offense with Maze and Trent Richardson.
Surprising the Tigers and putting them on their heels, much like Georgia did, is the only way Alabama will win the BCS National Championship. If the Crimson Tide can accomplish that—and do so in a more dominant fashion than LSU's win over them—they can help themselves out in the "best team of 2011" debate.
So there you have it. When Alabama beats LSU in the BCS title game, a furious debate of who the best team in college football is will ensue.
I'm going ahead and kill the debate by telling the sports world that when Alabama beats LSU—by a touchdown or more—it will prove Alabama was the best team of the 2011 college football season.
Prediction: No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. No. 1 LSU Tigers
Alabama 24-17
When Alabama beats LSU, it will prove two things. First and foremost, the BCS is a terribly broken system that needs to be done away with. Secondly, an Alabama win proves it is indeed 2011's best college football team.
