Texas Longhorns: Why Texas Is on Track to Win the BCS in the Near Future

Brad BerryDec 7, 2011

According to the what media and the championship game have told us all by themselves, the SEC is the best.

I can attribute their wins not to talent or inherent superiority, but to a style of football they play, i.e., they play a more running-based offense than, say, the Big 12. It is this matchup difference and clash that has allowed the SEC to win. The Texas Longhorns are currently moving to a more balanced offense that includes much more of a running game and if the passing game improves, it will be a nightmare for SEC schools to compete against.

Every school’s main concern is to win their conference. And in the Big 12, that entails having a fast defense that can compete with the high-tempo passing attacks in the conference. It is that fast defense that can cover the pass is what has caused the SEC to win, because Big 12 defenses have been created to deal with a spread-out passing attack, not a run-first grind-it-out type of offense.

The Longhorns are in a great position to neutralize that advantage because of the new running game that will enable Texas to chew the clock and keep the opponents defense on the field longer. However, when keeping the opponent on the field longer, that requires an effective passing attack that would further exhaust that hypothetical SEC opponent. Texas, by virtue of being in the Big 12, is going to develop their passing attack further.

The other reason why Texas is in position to win, in the future at least, is because of sheer talent. As everybody knows, or should know, Texas is one of the best recruiting schools in the nation. Such great talent, developed properly, should also push Texas above any SEC school in a potential championship matchup. Talent in college football is something that cannot be made up for with by pure scheming.

Will Texas win the conference next year? I don’t think so. I think that they might go to, say, the Cotton Bowl. But I do believe that they can make the shift back to national contender in maybe the next two seasons.

I am not sure if the SEC will be so dominant by that time because schools rise and fall very rapidly in college football. Assuming that the SEC remains just as good, I think that Texas will be able to schematically compete against that SEC opponent in a championship game. If Texas could beat USC, one of the greatest college football teams of the past decade, then I don’t see why Texas couldn’t do the same. Keep in mind also that if Colt McCoy wasn’t injured in that game and Gilbert wasn’t thrust into action (and we all know how well he did as a starter), I don’t see why Texas couldn’t beat Alabama.

Texas is on its way back to relevancy, and with the new offense in place and the defense doing a good job, I think that the Big 12 will finally be able to reclaim the championship.
