BCS Bowl Predictions: Overrated Teams That Will Be Exposed in Bowl Season

Eric BowmanDec 6, 2011

With so much layover time between the end of the college football season and the start of bowl games, a number of teams will reveal they're not as good as everybody thought they were.

Whether they can't handle the time off or are up against a much more difficult opponent than they're used to, several teams will show their true colors on the big stage.

Here are three teams in BCS bowls that will be exposed.

Oklahoma State

The Cowboys feel they deserved a shot at the BCS title, but they were denied by the polls. Now they'll take on Stanford, and their weak defense won't be able to stop Andrew Luck.

Likely his final collegiate game, Luck will not be denied a victory. While both offenses are excel at what they do, the Cardinal's defense will be the difference maker. Stanford ranks No. 25 in the country in total defense, whereas Oklahoma State ranks at No. 107.

Against high-powered offenses, the Cowboys have struggled. Don't mistake their blowout over Oklahoma as a sign they're going to crush Stanford because Luck won't let that happen. The fact the Cowboys lost to Iowa State is all you need to know about how overrated this team truly is.

Luck and company will show the world the Cowboys aren't the real deal, proving the polls made the right decision to have Alabama take on LSU for the title.

West Virginia

The Mountaineers have shown signs of brilliance this season, and other times they have fallen flat on their face. It's anybody's guess which team will show up in the Orange Bowl against Clemson.

I think they'll will be rolling with Geno Smith to make it a good game at first, but the Tigers have too many playmakers on offense and they will pull away late in the game.

It wouldn't be a surprise if West Virginia was blown out because that's just what happens to the Big East. The Mountaineers will compete, but in the end, they're just no match for the speed and skill of Clemson.

Virginia Tech

The Hokies have only been challenged by Clemson this season, and both times they were demolished. The Michigan Wolverines have a much better defense, and they will prevent Virginia Tech from a monster performance in the Sugar Bowl.

Blessed by an easy schedule, the Hokies looked really good this year. However, the Wolverines won't have much trouble stopping David Wilson, and they already know how to handle mobile quarterbacks, so Logan Thomas will have to beat them through the air.

This is a big stage for a young Hokies team, and it will crumble under the pressure, as the Wolverines walk away with an easy victory.
