BCS Bowl Games 2012: Will Oklahoma St., Stanford Combine to Score 100 Points?
How excited are you for a BCS bowl game that could surpass the 100-point barrier?
The No. 3-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys are scheduled to face the No. 4-ranked Stanford Cardinal in a Tostitos Fiesta Bowl that features two of the best five quarterbacks in the entire country.
Brandon Weeden has 34 TD passes, Andrew Luck has 35. Weeden has the undisputed best receiver in the country in Justin Blackmon (1,336 yards, 15 TDs) and Luck has the most productive tight end in Coby Fleener (648 yards, 10 TDs). When you combine the 49.3 points per game OSU averages with the 43.6 of Stanford you have 92.9 total points.
Screw another 9-6 LSU-Alabama game—this is going to be the best bowl game of the year.
The Cardinal hold a strong advantage in the running game, where they have racked up just under 208 yards per contest. It keeps everything balanced and Luck is masterful at scanning the opponent’s defense and altering the play to counter it. It’s no secret that Luck is the Heisman front-runner and likely No. 1 overall pick in April; obviously, he wants to cement his legacy by going out strong.
He will need the help of a defense that—to put it kindly—struggles against good offenses. It gave up 48 points to USC (in triple-overtime) and 53 points to Oregon. It can be scored on early and often when the opponent's QB is a precision passer that gets rid of the ball quickly.
Enter Weeden, who, at the age of 28, is the elder statesman on campus, and plays like a guy that has six more years of quarterback education than his peers. His large frame (6'4", 218 pounds) allows him to stand tall over the defensive line and survey all of his options. He makes quick, yet smart decisions with the ball and is sporting an off-the-charts 73 percent completion percentage on 522 pass attempts.
Incredible.
He is going to need a huge effort considering his defense is ranked 61st in the nation and has allowed at least 28 points in six of their games—the Cowboys gave up 34 to Louisiana-Lafayette!
Expect this game to feature multiple plays of more than 50 yards and enough points to make you lose count. This is the game to determine who deserves second place in the final poll and don’t be surprised to see a 50-48 score with the winning drive coming in the final seconds.
The SEC can have its defense—give me the Fiesta Bowl!
