LSU vs. Alabama II for the BCS Title Not a Red-Letter Day for Me
Today is one of my least favorite days on the sports almanac. As most of you know, the wizards of college football decreed LSU and Alabama will meet for the second time this year to decide the BCS title. Which, of course, leaves a handful on the outside looking in. And a great deal of wailing.
"We have to have a playoff in college football," scream the great unhappy. "Games like this are why we need it."
Oh my side and body—really? Need it?
In this great and God-fearing nation of ours we need to get more folks back to work, bring our soldiers home from several places across the globe and take better care of the planet. Those are needs.
Wants fall into that box that holds things that would be nice to have, but are not at all necessary. Eating a whole apple pie is a want. Eating a balanced meal is a need. Catch my breeze?
Yes, I will grant you that major college football is as tangled as a plate of pasta but the notion that it needs to be fixed is laughable. I can understand the logic for a playoff, but what I don't see is anyone crafting a formula that makes 99 percent of us jump out of our seats in affirmation.
And I kinda like the fact that virtually every game means something throughout the entire football season. There is an exquisite tension to college football that does not exist anywhere else.
So please let us be judicious when we assign our wants versus our needs. Until order is restored, I want to find some place quiet.
