BCS Championship: 5 Worst Teams To Make National Championship Game
The final BCS Standings of 2011 have been released, and much to the chagrin of non-SEC fans, the BCS title game will be a rematch between the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The Crimson Tide's greatest strength is having a close loss against LSU; their overall resume is less impressive.
With that, let's look at the worst teams to make the title game in the BCS era (since 1998).
2001 Nebraska Cornhuskers
1 of 5The Cornhuskers, led by Heisman winner Eric Crouch, seemed to be rightfully knocked out of BCS contention after being humiliated 62-36 by the Colorado Buffaloes.
However, the crazy BCS computers put Nebraska at No. 2, above both Oregon and Colorado itself.
In the Rose Bowl (which served as the title game that year), Nebraska proved it didn't belong by being lambasted 37-14 by the Miami Hurricanes.
2003 Oklahoma Sooners
2 of 5Oklahoma was plowing its way toward an undefeated season until the Big 12 Championship, when it was pounded 35-7 by Darren Sproles and the Kansas State Wildcats.
Unfortunately, that game meant nothing to the BCS, and the Sooners went on to the Sugar Bowl where they lost 21-14 to LSU.
The outrage over Oklahoma making the big game led to the USC Trojans being named National Champions by the AP Poll.
2006 Ohio State Buckeyes
3 of 5This was the year Ohio State and the Big Ten were exposed as frauds. Unlike 2011, the BCS spared us of a rematch, which would have been Ohio State vs. Michigan.
Instead, Ohio State faced the Florida Gators in the championship game. Troy Smith and the Buckeyes were embarrassed to the tune of 41-14.
2007 Ohio State Buckeyes
4 of 5Rinse, wash, repeat. Ohio State was seemingly out of the title picture after losing to Illinois. However, after a truly insane series of upsets, the Buckeyes ended the season as No. 1.
Once again, they were blown out in the big game as LSU won 38-24 to become the first two-loss BCS champion.
2011 Alabama Crimson Tide
5 of 5Alabama has been hyped as a great team all year, but their only great win was against Arkansas. In fact, they've only beaten three FCS teams with a winning record.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma State has seven such wins, including four against BCS Top 25 teams.
Add in the fact that Nick Saban's squad already lost (at home no less) to LSU, and Alabama hardly seems deserving to make the BCS title game.
