BCS Rankings Week 15: How Oklahoma and Other Teams Got to This Point
The regular season of college football is now officially over. This has been one of the most surprising and intriguing years, with everything leading up to tonight's announcement of the final BCS rankings.
Oklahoma was the No. 1 team in the country when the season began. After a big road win against No. 5 Florida State, many people thought the Sooners were on their way to a national championship.
That was short lived. The Sooners were defeated a few weeks later by Texas Tech and lost two more games later in the season.
Florida State continued to drop in the rankings after losing three games early in the season. The Gators are one of the biggest disappointments of 2011.
Texas A&M also falls into the disappointment category with Florida State. They began the season in the Top 10, but a 6-6 record led to the firing of head coach Mike Sherman.
Sherman was not the only coach to get canned. UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel and Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson were let go, among many others.
Wisconsin was a popular pick a few weeks into the season, but lost a few close games on Hail Mary plays. The Badgers will have to settle for a Rose Bowl appearance against Pac-12 champion Oregon.
As the season progressed, two teams from the SEC stood tall and began to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. They met in a showdown on Nov. 5th that was one of the most anticipated regular season games in recent history.
LSU defeated Alabama 9-6 in overtime and became the No. 1 team in the country.
The Tigers are the only undefeated team left; Houston was knocked off for the first time on Saturday.
Controversy is still swirling as to which team should be playing against LSU in the BCS National Championship game.
There is talk of Oklahoma State jumping past Alabama in the rankings and playing for the national championship.
The Cowboys have had an excellent season. At 11-1, and having beaten five teams in the Top 25, they certainly have a legitimate argument for why they should play.
This could have been the year for Boise State. Had the Broncos not lost a one-point game to TCU, they could have their first shot at playing for all the marbles. Instead, they will likely end up in the Top Five.
No matter what happens when the BCS standings come out, it will not take away from a college football season that will long be remembered. Depending on what happens, it's a season that could go down as one of the most controversial, ever.
