BCS Rankings: Upsets That Dropped Teams in Bowl Picture
There's nothing more heartbreaking than having a special year and then losing your last game of the regular season, consequently getting dropped in the bowl picture.
There were three upsets that hurt teams in Week 14 of the college football season, and two of these upsets will swing them out of BCS bowl games.
3. Michigan State (10-3)
The Michigan State Spartans had the lead over the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers through three quarters on Saturday, but when the fourth quarter came around they choked.
The Spartans were outscored 14-3 in the fourth quarter and ended up losing, 42-39.
Currently at No. 13, they will surely drop when the new BCS rankings are released on Sunday night and I expect them to be in the Outback Bowl.
2. Virginia Tech (11-2)
The Virginia Tech Hokies had won their last seven games headed into their matchup with the No. 20 Clemson Tigers on Saturday.
The only problem was, their only loss of the season to that point was against Clemson.
On Saturday, the Tigers were once again the Hokies' Kryptonite, defeating them, 38-10. Interestingly enough, the Hokies averaged 28.5 points per game this season, but curiously struggled against a mediocre Tigers defense, scoring a combined 13 points in two matchups.
The loss swung the Hokies out of the Orange Bowl, while the Tigers captured the ACC bid.
1. Houston (12-1)
The Houston Cougars were the Cinderella story of this season, getting off to a 12-0 start and one win away from capturing a BCS bid, despite playing in a poor conference.
But the No. 6 Cougars were shocked on Saturday against No. 24 Southern Miss, their first-ranked offense and 41st-ranked defense falling apart as they were routed, 49-28.
Houston star quarterback Case Keenum threw for 373 yards and two touchdowns, but it also took him 67 attempts and he threw two interceptions.
Houston was consequently dropped from the Sugar Bowl.
