NFL Report Card Week 13: Handing out Grades to All 32 Teams

Wes StueveDec 4, 2011

Yet another NFL week in the books.

You already know Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to yet another victory, but how did the team grade out in the process? Obviously Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers won again, but did they earn another A?

How badly did the Baltimore Ravens really beat the Cleveland Browns? Did the Indianapolis Colts actually hang with the New England Patriots?

In any given week, a team can grade out in a variety of ways. What's the Week 13 report card looking like for your team?

Chicago Bears

1 of 32

In a performance that surely came as no surprise, Caleb Hanie threw three interceptions and was sacked seven times. Unfortunately, the Bears didn't have Matt Forte to fall back on, as the star running back went down with a knee injury after just five carries.

Chicago's run defense completely shut down Kansas City's rushing attack, and though Tyler Palko wasn't awful, he didn't do much damage either. With Forte and Jay Cutler seemingly out for a while, the Bears might want to address the quarterback position in some way.

Grade: D+

Cincinnati Bengals

2 of 32

Playing against the always dominant Pittsburgh defense, Cincinnati struggled. Andy Dalton completed less than half of his passes prior to sitting out the fourth quarter, and the team's run game was nonexistent.

Defensively, the Bengals didn't allow many yards, but the Steelers scored 35 points nonetheless. Cincinnati allowed Ben Roethlisberger to complete a lot of passes, and Rashard Mendenhall scored two touchdowns as well.

After the loss, the Bengals are still in playoff contention, but another loss like this one could change that.

Grade: D

Buffalo Bills

3 of 32

Though Ryan Fitzpatrick turned in a solid performance, he wasn't spectacular and couldn't bring home the victory. C.J. Spiller played well, but he struggled in the second half.

As usual, the Buffalo defense struggled, allowing Chris Johnson to gain 150 yards on the ground. The Bills didn't lose to an awful team here, but it's obvious that Buffalo isn't as good as we first thought.

Grade: B-

Denver Broncos

4 of 32

After looking like one of the worst passers ever, Tim Tebow actually played like a real quarterback against the Vikings. Tebow ran the ball just four times, and the Broncos scored 35 points. Willis McGahee had success on the ground, and Tebow was excellent (never thought I'd say that).

The Denver defense, on the other hand, wasn't so successful. The Broncos allowed the Vikings—without Adrian Peterson—to score 32 points. Toby Gerhart gained 91 yards, and Christian Ponder added another 381 yards through the air.

It was the opposite of what we've come to expect from Denver. The team's offense was great, and the defense putrid.

Grade: B-

Cleveland Browns

5 of 32

Colt McCoy provided the Browns with yet another awful performance, and Peyton Hillis didn't receive enough carries to make a huge impact. Cleveland's wide receivers didn't help McCoy out by dropping multiple passes, but the second-year pro's performance was still abysmal.

The Browns defense allowed Ray Rice to rush for over 200 yards, and Ricky Williams added another 76. Though Joe Flacco didn't do anything of note, he didn't need to.

Simply put, Cleveland was awful in every aspect of the game.

Grade:  F

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

6 of 32

Josh Johnson had some success through the air, but he didn't do nearly enough to earn the victory for Tampa Bay. With no run game, Johnson was forced to carry the offense, and he couldn't do it.

Defensively, the Buccaneers didn't allow an absurd number of yards, yet the Panthers scored 38 points. The talented Tampa Bay team continues to underachieve under the leadership of Raheem Morris.

Grade: D+

Arizona Cardinals

7 of 32

Beanie Wells struggled to find success on the ground, but surprisingly Kevin Kolb led the Cardinals to a victory. Kolb was efficient, completing 64 percent of his passes, and threw for 247 yards.

Arizona completely shut down DeMarco Murray, and Tony Romo didn't accomplish much through the air either. Dallas obviously has offensive talent, and holding it to just 13 points is an accomplishment for the Cardinals.

Grade: B-

San Diego Chargers

8 of 32

After playing horribly for his first 11 games, Philip Rivers dominated the Jaguars. Rivers completed an astounding 22 of his 28 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns. At the same time, Ryan Mathews rushed for 112 yards on just 13 carries.

Though San Diego allowed only 14 points, Blaine Gabbert played better than usual, and Maurice Jones-Drew found success on the ground. Once again, the Chargers were unable to provide any pass rush to speak of.

Grade: B+

Kansas City Chiefs

9 of 32

In the Chiefs' surprising victory over the Chicago Bears, Tyler Palko actually looked like, well, a slightly-less-awful Tyler Palko. Kansas City's run game did nothing, but Palko played just well enough to lead the team to a victory.

Obviously with Caleb Hanie at quarterback, the Bears weren't going to do much offensively. When Matt Forte went down with a knee injury, it got even worse. With that said, Kansas City still didn't play poorly on defense and forced three interceptions.

Grade: C+

Indianapolis Colts

10 of 32

It seems impossible that Dan Orlovsky actually played a great game. Though the new Indianapolis starter completed 30 of his 37 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns, the Colts still fell to New England.

Indianapolis allowed the Patriots to score quite a few points, but that's not unexpected. The Patriots have an incredible offense, and allowing 31 points is nothing for Indianapolis to be ashamed of.

The Colts did score two touchdowns in garbage time, but the final score was still surprising.

Grade: C-

Dallas Cowboys

11 of 32

Though Tony Romo didn't play poorly, Jason Garrett's puzzling clock management helped the Cowboys earn another loss. Rookie sensation DeMarco Murray's lack of success on the ground didn't help Dallas either.

Rob Ryan's defense shut down Beanie Wells, but Kevin Kolb was unusually successful through the air. The Dallas defense still only allowed 19 points, but it was a disappointing effort from the Cowboys.

Grade: C

Miami Dolphins

12 of 32

After looking like Andrew Luck's future team, the Dolphins have really played well as of late. Matt Moore managed the game against Oakland, and Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas both went off, leading the team to 209 rushing yards.

Miami's defense shut down the Raiders as well. Carson Palmer completed less than half his passes, and Michael Bush couldn't even manage two yards a carry. To put it simply, the Dolphins dominated a decent team.

Grade: A

Philadelphia Eagles

13 of 32

Though Vince Young wasn't quite as awful as the stats indicated and LeSean McCoy was excellent, the Philadelphia offense scored just 14 points. With Jeremy Maclin hurt and DeSean Jackson acting like a baby, the Eagles' once dynamic offense has been awful.

The Philadelphia defense continued to struggle, allowing 31 points and 174 rushing yards. Against a team as bad as the Seahawks, this was an abysmal performance.

Grade: F

Atlanta Falcons

14 of 32

For a supposedly offense-oriented team, the Falcons haven't been scoring many points. Against the Texans, Matt Ryan was awful, completing less than half his passes and throwing two interceptions. Michael Turner wasn't much better on the ground.

Defensively, Atlanta did a good job of limiting the Matt Schaub-less Texans. Arian Foster gained 111 rushing yards, but he had over 30 carries. The Falcons faced a good defense, but the team needs to pick it up if it wants to make the playoffs.

Grade: C-

San Francisco 49ers

15 of 32

San Francisco absolutely dominated the team's contest against the lowly Rams. Alex Smith played well, completing 17 of his 23 passes while throwing no interceptions. Frank Gore wasn't overly successful, but the team still added a routine victory.

The 49ers contained a well below average A.J. Feeley and completely shut down Steven Jackson and the St. Louis rushing attack. The Rams didn't score a single point, and they didn't deserve to either.

Grade: A

New York Giants

16 of 32

Despite an excellent performance from Eli Manning, the Giants weren't able to deliver the Packers their first loss. Though Manning wasn't as dominant as he has been at times, the New York offense scored an impressive 35 points.

Per the usual, the Packer offense dominated. Aaron Rodgers continued to play unstoppable football, though he did have one of his worst games of the year. The Giants did completely shut down the Green Bay rushing attack, but they still allowed 38 points.

New York actually played excellently. They just weren't quite good enough to knock off the NFL's best team.

Grade: B+

Jacksonville Jaguars

17 of 32

Blaine Gabbert wasn't awful for once, but the Jaguars still scored just 14 points. With plenty of time to throw, Gabbert was actually able to complete more than half his passes. Maurice Jones-Drew also had some success, and Jacksonville benefited from San Diego's soft defensive play.

Defensively, the Jaguars struggled. Philip Rivers turned in what may have been his best game of the season, and Ryan Mathews had a a field day on the ground. Jacksonville's poor secondary definitely showed, and the team's usually stellar run defense underperformed as well.

Grade: D+

New York Jets

18 of 32

With a shocking resurgence in the fourth quarter, the Jets managed to score 34 points against Washington. Mark Sanchez still did nothing special, but he managed not to kill the team, and Shonn Greene secured a victory with three touchdowns.

Defensively, New York shut down the Redskins. Whether this is because of the Jets defense or the Washington offense is hard to say. It was probably both.

Regardless, New York managed to put together a solid offensive performance. Though it was against the Redskins, this is encouraging.

Grade: B

Detroit Lions

19 of 32

Though Matthew Stafford threw for over 400 yards, he still suffered from occasionally erratic accuracy and limited the Detroit offense at times. The Lions' dynamic offense was seriously hindered by penalties and simply couldn't put much of anything together.

Detroit allowed New Orleans to score at will and was destroyed by the Saints' passing attack. The Lions didn't allow much in the way of rushing yards, but New Orleans still easily scored 31 points.

If it weren't for penalties, Detroit may have stayed in this game. As it stands, however, the contest was almost a blowout.

Grade: C-

Green Bay Packers

20 of 32

Though Aaron Rodgers once again dominated, the Packers nearly suffered their first loss. The team's rushing attack was virtually useless, and even Rodgers wasn't as spectacular as usual.

Green Bay allowed New York to score a dangerous 35 points, and Eli Manning threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Ahmad Bradshaw didn't hurt the Packers, but Brandon Jacobs was successful.

The Packers offense was still superb, but their defense could end up costing them.

Grade: A-

Carolina Panthers

21 of 32

Statistically, Cam Newton had one of his less successful games through the air, but the results are undeniable. Jonathan Stewart actually had a great game, rushing for 80 yards on 14 carries, and Newton was efficient. Newton also added three rushing touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Carolina shut down Josh Johnson and the Buccaneers. Though Johnson wasn't awful, the Panthers held Tampa Bay to just 19 points.

This just might have been Carolina's best game of the year.

Grade: B+

New England Patriots

22 of 32

Tom Brady played well against the Colts, but the Patriots' run game was virtually nonexistent. Fortunately, Rob Gronkowski is one of the league's best red-zone weapons, and New England still cruised to a victory.

New England's defense was not so good, however. In his first start with Indianapolis, Dan Orlovsky threw for over 350 yards and two touchdowns. The Patriots still won as expected, but allowing the Colts to score 24 points (granted, two of the touchdowns came with little time remaining) isn't a great sign.

Grade: B+

Oakland Raiders

23 of 32

The picture sums up this game for Carson Palmer and the Raiders. After two straight excellent performances, Palmer fell back to earth against the Dolphins.

In Palmer's defense, he was frequently hit and had no run game to help him out. The Raiders defense was almost as putrid as their defense, allowing 34 points. Miami rushed for 209 yards, and Matt Moore had a decent game as well.

Though Oakland is still 7-5, the team desperately needs to pick it up in order to make the playoffs.

Grade: D

St. Louis Rams

24 of 32

In Sam Bradford's absence, A.J. Feeley and the St. Louis offense played about as poorly as expected. Steven Jackson and Jerious Norwood were useless on the ground, and the Rams were shut out in another pathetic effort.

St. Louis allowed the unspectacular San Francisco offense to score 26 points. The Rams did nothing to stop Alex Smith, though they did a good job of limiting Frank Gore.

The 49ers are a great football team, but the Rams' lack of offense and defense was incredibly unimpressive.

Grade: F

Baltimore Ravens

25 of 32

Joe Flacco struggled some against the Browns, but Ray Rice and the run game led the Ravens to an easy victory. Rice rushed for a staggering 204 yards, and Ricky Williams joined in as well.

Baltimore shut down Colt McCoy, and Peyton Hillis didn't do much either. If Hillis had received more carries, he may have been able to do more damage, but he didn't.

The previously 8-3 Ravens steamrolled the Browns and further established themselves as one of the AFC's best teams.

Grade: A

Washington Redskins

26 of 32

In a not-so-surprising performance, Rex Grossman completed only 19 of his 46 passes and threw an interception to boot. Roy Helu found some success on the ground, but the Redskins couldn't score enough to overcome a fourth-quarter surge by the Jets.

Washington allowed Shonn Greene to score three touchdowns and average four yards per carry, but worst of all, they let Mark Sanchez play decently. Prior to the fourth quarter, the Redskins defense wasn't doing too poorly, but then it fell apart.

Grade: D+

New Orleans Saints

27 of 32

The Saints passed at will against Detroit and easily scored 31 points. Drew Brees was simply fantastic, as he turned in one of his best performances of the year. New Orleans' run game didn't do much of anything, but it didn't even matter.

On defense, the Saints allowed Detroit to make some plays, but the Lions shot themselves in the foot with penalties. Matthew Stafford did throw for over 400 yards, however, and the Saints were beat downfield quite frequently.

New Orleans showed it has some things to work on, but this game was easily won.

Grade: B+

Seattle Seahawks

28 of 32

Playing against the much more talented Eagles, Seattle completely dominated the contest. Marshawn Lynch had a phenomenal game, rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns on just 22 carries.

Even Tarvaris Jackson played well, completing 13 of his 16 passes for 190 yards. The Seahawks also did a great job of limiting the always dynamic Philadelphia offense, allowing just 14 points and forcing four interceptions.

Though the Eagles have been awful this year, Seattle's victory was still impressive. While Philadelphia continues to underachieve, the Seahawks are playing above their talent level.

Grade: B+

Pittsburgh Steelers

29 of 32

In one of their highest-scoring performances of the year, the Steelers didn't really do anything great. The scoreboard does not lie, however. Offensively, Pittsburgh played mistake-free football, and it was more than adequate.

On defense, the Steelers shut down Cincinnati, allowing just 232 yards. Quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Bruce Gradkowski both struggled, and Cedric Benson was just average on the ground.

Pittsburgh didn't do anything flashy, but the team dominated Cincinnati nonetheless.

Grade: A

Houston Texans

30 of 32

Without Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub, the Texans aren't expected to do much offensively, but the team's defense is still lights out. On 31 carries, Arian Foster gained a mediocre 111 yards, and T.J. Yates played up—or down—to expectations.

However, the Houston defense completely shut down Atlanta's offense. Matt Ryan threw two interceptions with an awful completion percentage, while Michael Turner gained just over three yards per carry. The Texans may not be able to keep up with a great team, but for now they are still rolling.

Grade: B-

Tennessee Titans

31 of 32

Matt Hasselbeck was just decent, but Chris Johnson was able to carry the Titans to the victory over Buffalo. With 153 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, Johnson built off an excellent performance last week against the Buccaneers.

Tennessee's defense also did a good job, limiting the Bills to just 17 points. The team's run defense wasn't great against C.J. Spiller in the first half, but the second half was a different story.

Grade: B+

Minnesota Vikings

32 of 32

Even without Adrian Peterson, the Vikings somehow managed to score 32 points. Toby Gerhart was successful on the ground, and though Christian Ponder threw for 381 yards, his two interceptions may have cost the team the game.

While Minnesota's offense was effective, its defense was not. The Vikings allowed Tim Tebow to carve up their secondary, and Willis McGahee had a field day on the ground. Minnesota knew how to stop Tebow on the ground, but it couldn't contain him as a passer.
