Bowl Games 2011: Picking Bowl Games for the BCS Bowl Snubs

Jonathan WooDec 4, 2011

The 2011 college football season is in the books, and the bowl selections are just hours away.

In the BCS, we know LSU is destined for the National Championship Game with its demolition of Georgia Saturday. At the same time, Oklahoma State perhaps made huge impressions with its own thrashing of the Sooners in the Bedlam game as the Pokes merited a BCS appearance as well.

But for those teams who get the snub, where will they be?

Here are some predictions for those BCS snubs.

Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl

1 of 5

In any other season, a 10-2 mark may have gotten Arkansas a BCS appearance, though playing in the SEC can shatter those chances.

The Razorbacks boast the conference's top offense, but routs at the hands of the SEC's top teams in LSU and Alabama leave the Hogs clearly out of the BCS picture.

While the snub is definitely reasonable, there is no doubt that Arkansas can compete with the BCS qualifiers not named LSU or Alabama.

The Razorbacks appear to be in line for a Cotton Bowl appearance with the first non-BCS team from the Big 12 in Baylor.

A couple of big offenses and somewhat questionable defenses should make for a thrilling shootout at Jerry World.

Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl

2 of 5

The worst thing that Boise State could have done to hurt its BCS chances was to miss a game-winning field goal against TCU.

Yeah, that happened.

With yet another BCS appearance on the line for Chris Petersen, the missed field goal should send his Broncos to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, Calif. on Dec. 21.

It is not exactly the storybook ending Boise State was hoping for after a huge 35-21 win over Georgia to open the year.

Baylor in the Cotton Bowl

3 of 5

A 9-3, Baylor might be one of the most exciting nine-win teams in all of college football, but early slip-ups in the season will have the Bears watching the BCS games instead of playing in one.

There are simply one or two too many teams ahead of Baylor in the projections to have it receive an at-large bid for a BCS appearance.

Despite the Bears' five-game winning streak to end the year, Baylor will take its second-ranked offense in the country and march to the Cotton Bowl to play Arkansas.

While that matchup with the SEC is hardly anything to complain about, you can be sure that Robert Griffin III would eat up that spotlight whether he wins the Heisman or not.

Houston in the TicketCity Bowl

4 of 5

The second team to choke away its BCS hopes was Houston, as the Cougars convincingly lost to Southern Miss in the Conference USA Championship Game.

The loss immediately dissolved any BCS at-large opportunity and planted Kevin Sumlin's side to a bowl game that has a significantly smaller paycheck.

Houston appears set for the TicketCity Bowl against the bottom-most qualifier in the Big Ten—a far cry from the type of team the Cougars would have faced in the BCS.

South Carolina in the CapitalOne Bowl

5 of 5

Not only did South Carolina lose out on a chance at an SEC Title, the Gamecocks should be watching the BCS games in January.

Despite a quality ranking in the final release, the Gamecocks will be passed up in the BCS selection.

That is the hardship of the SEC. Despite the 10-2 mark, Steve Spurrier's team will narrowly miss out on a prime-time appearance.

Instead, the Gamecocks look destined for a clash with a worthy Big Ten opponent in the CapitalOne Bowl.
