Georgia vs. LSU: The Top 5 Player vs. Player Matchups of the SEC Championship
The No. 1 LSU Tigers only have one final SEC showdown standing between them and the BCS national championship game.
Today, we'll find out if the Tigers can finish off the regular season in style, as they head up to Atlanta for a meeting with No. 14 Georgia in the SEC championship game in Atlanta.
The Bulldogs are definitely a worthy adversary, but it's hard to see LSU taking its foot off the gas pedal at this point in the season, as they're now so close to making it to New Orleans.
This game will likely come down to which team wins the most important individual matchups of the day.
With that in mind, here's a look at five player vs. player matchups to keep an eye on during the game.
WR Tavarres King vs. LSU's Cornerbacks
1 of 5LSU may just have the top two cornerbacks in all of college football with Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu, and we’re going to get the chance to see both of the star DBs get tested by an underrated Georgia receiving corps today.
The leader of the Bulldogs’ pass-catchers is junior Tavarres King, who was forced to step up this season after the early departure of highly touted Top-10 draft pick A.J. Green.
King, a former four-star recruit, only has 37 catches this season, but he’s definitely dangerous, and he’s the type of receiver who can explode for a big play on any given snap.
Claiborne and Mathieu better be ready to man up today, because not only will they have King to worry about, they'll also have to keep an eye on budding freshman Malcolm Mitchell.
C P.J. Lonergan vs. Georgia’s Nose Tackles
2 of 5There’s a reason that Georgia ranks sixth in the country in rush defense, allowing only 94 yards on the ground per game.
The Bulldogs have two mammoth nose tackles that they like to stick in the middle of their 3-4 defense, with John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers.
Jenkins and Geathers both tip the scales at over 350 pounds, and they both love to feast on double teams during a game.
Center P.J. Lonergan and the rest of LSU’s interior offensive line are going to have a tough time trying to move Jenkins and Geathers out of the way to open up running lanes in the middle of the Bulldogs' defense.
OT Cordy Glenn vs. DE Sam Montgomery
3 of 5Cordy Glenn is considered one of the top senior offensive line prospects in the country. The tackle-guard tweener will have a great opportunity to show NFL scouts that he’s got enough quickness to handle playing on the outside in the pros when he goes up against speedy LSU DE Sam Montgomery today.
Montgomery may only be 6’4’’ and 250 pounds, but he’s got the quickness and athleticism to be a pass-rushing terror if he gets a step on the opposing offensive tackle.
Glenn better make sure he comes ready to play and ready to get off the ball on time, or else he’ll be looking back at Montgomery running by him an awful lot during the game.
RB Isaiah Crowell vs. LSU's Linebackers
4 of 5Georgia RB Isaiah Crowell has been a solid contributor as a freshman this season, carrying the load of the Bulldogs' rushing attack, but he has never faced a defense like the one he'll go up against today, so it should be interesting to see how he performs against LSU.
Crowell has a nice blend of speed and power, and he can definitely hurt a defense if he gets into the open field, which is why it will be imperative for LSU linebackers Ryan Baker, Stefoin Francois and Kevin Minter to keep him under wraps all game long.
LSU’s Tackles vs. LB Jarvis Jones
5 of 5LSU offensive tackles Chris Faulk and Alex Hurst are two of the top tackles in the SEC, but they’re going to have their hands full trying to slow down Georgia’s sensational 3-4 rush linebacker Jarvis Jones.
Jones leads the SEC with 19.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks, and he has a knack for finding his way into the opposition’s backfield.
The 6’3’’, 240-pound redshirt sophomore has the speed off the edge to really cause havoc for LSU QB Jordan Jefferson.
