Georgia vs. LSU: 5 Reasons Why the SEC Championship Game Is the Tigers' to Lose

Mikhail TurnerDec 2, 2011

The LSU Tigers should win Saturday's SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs and effectively secure a place in the BCS title game.

Of the two teams, the Bulldogs have made a massive improvement since last year's 6-7 record (including the bowl loss to UCF).

However, LSU has just built upon their solidity of last season and have been the top dog throughout the entire season.

Georgia has not been in this position for quite some time, with 2005 being the last season the team was involved in the SEC Championship Game. LSU, on the other hand, was there in 2007 and went on to win the BCS title against Ohio State.

The game will be a definitely be a good one, but here are reasons why LSU will win.

Coaching Advantage

1 of 5

Les Miles is crazy—crazy good. To be honest, both these coaches are pretty good, and what Mark Richt has done at Georgia this season cannot be overlooked.

Both coaches have similar overall records, but Miles has been more instrumental for the Tigers. Within two years of getting the job, he had an SEC Championship and a BCS title under his belt.

Richt has a few individual titles and has led the team to some championships as well, but he has been around longer. If you go on this year alone, Miles and LSU have had a significantly tougher schedule to overcome.

Miles' ability to keep his team perfect against the opposition they faced has been to due to his coaching acumen. The players on his team are good, no doubt, but Miles has to give them the game plan and make adjustments if necessary.

The 'Mad Hatter' also has the edge in terms of charisma. His players surely love to play for him, and would most definitely put in their all.

Team Mentality

2 of 5

This team's mentality has been a winning one all season. Seven of their 12 games have been against ranked opponents, and they have dealt with all those hurdles admirably.

This team is coming off a 10-2 season, so they are used to winning, but the way they have done it this season is exceptional. They have only had one close game all season, against Alabama, and that was to be expected.

In all their other games, LSU has won by at least 10 points. The Bulldogs' run of 10 straight wins has been good, considering they started the season on the wrong foot, but they have run it close when they shouldn't. They were scared a little by Vanderbilt and then Florida in back-to-back weekends.

While Georgia may be confident, even in an underdog role, LSU will have a steely determination and expectation to win that will drive them in this game.

Tougher Opposition

3 of 5

We already touched a little on the quality of opposition that LSU has faced thus far. Of the seven ranked opponents they played, three were ranked in the top three when LSU faced them.

LSU's away schedule was also more grueling, with three ranked opponents in five games. Georgia only faced one ranked opponent away, in the form of rival Georgia Tech.

Georgia played against four ranked opponents, and lost two of those games at home to Boise State and Arkansas, two teams that LSU would surely have handled, especially at home.

LSU's mentality is a by-product of them playing so much tough opposition, and they will not fear going into the Georgia Dome tomorrow.

Defense

4 of 5

The two teams are very similar statistically in this department, but the edge does have to go to LSU.

Both teams are similar in sacks—LSU has 33 and Georgia has 32—and interceptions—LSU has 16 and Georgia has 17—but LSU is second in the nation in total defense with 248.4 yards per game, while Georgia is fifth in total defense with 271.1 yards per game.

LSU will need that edge, as they go up against the better offense when you look at the statistics. Sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray has been spectacular this season, but he hasn't faced a defense like LSU's just yet.

Chance to Go Undefeated

5 of 5

LSU may be considered a lock for the BCS title game, but they have one very good reason to win this game. It brings them one step closer to being undefeated.

That alone should motivate the players to a top performance, and that is before you add on the fact that Les Miles surely will not let his team walk through the game.

The last time the Tigers won the BCS title, they did not go undefeated, but doing so this time around would make them the third straight SEC team to do so.

If there is one reason the Tigers will win this game, this is it.
