Chris Paul Trade Rumors: How Chris Paul Can Win a Title Without the Knicks

Jason KiangDec 1, 2011

Chris Paul has made his claim, at least via his agent anyway.

He wants to go to New York and won't sign an extension anywhere else. This would presume that New Orleans has no choice other than to trade him there for the dismal pieces the Knicks can send back.

But here's the thing that no one has thought about, NO doesn't have to trade him to NY, especially if they think they can get a better offer elsewhere.

But who's going to offer him anything substantial if he's not going to sign long term? No one.

But that's the beauty of it, you don't have to.

With NY having really nothing of substantial trade value, all any rival GM willing to take a rental out on Chris Paul for this year has to do is offer something slightly better than the junk yard pieces NY can offer.

If you make a run at the title, maybe even win the title, who knows if he'll change his mind?

The Clippers for example, could outbid the Knicks in their sleep without having to give up too much. Say Mo Williams, Eric Bledsoe and a draft pick and that beats out NY already.

With Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin and the center combo of Jordan and Kaman along with the other talented bench players, that's a championship team.

What about Orlando?

Trade a few players around to get some picks to package with Jameer Nelson and Ryan Anderson and wala! You've outbid NY and instantly created another championship force in Florida.

A Dwight Howard/Chris Paul combo surrounded by complimentary shooters could contend with anybody in the league.

The point is just because Chris Paul wants to go to NY doesn't mean you have to trade him there for scraps. Teams can and should take a rental out on him this year. If you win a championship or come close, who knows?

He might stay.

If I'm a team like Orlando, with nothing to lose, I go for it.
