Justin Combs, P. Diddy's Son, Made Right Choice in Committing to UCLA
Times are tough at UCLA right now with Rick Neuheisel being fired as the football team's head coach and being 32-point underdogs in the Pac-12 championship game.
On the positive side, they signed one of the most famous two-star recruits in the country: Justin Combs, son of rap mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
According to Brandon Huffman of Scout.com, Justin Combs knew for awhile that UCLA was the place for him, but he made it official on Tuesday.
"“I have faith in the program that everything will be OK,” said Combs. “My love for UCLA is so strong. I trust and know that everything will work out.”
Combs took an unofficial visit to Westwood in August for the Bruins’ Fall Scrimmage and that was what tipped the scales the Bruins’ way.
“It was love at first sight,” said Combs. “When I first went on a visit, I fell in love with the program and I fell in love with the environment and the tradition. I was good friends with Rahim Moore too and just to hear it from the players, it was love at first sight."
"
The timing of the announcement does seem strange, but let's be honest: Players today are not worried as much about who is coaching them as they are about getting the most exposure to make an good impression on NFL teams.
Combs does not have to worry about money because of who his father is, but he does have a chance to make a name for himself in one of the biggest media markets in the country.
I don't think that is the only reason Combs is going to UCLA to play football, but it definitely doesn't hurt.
Regardless of what the reason is for going to UCLA, it is a good move for him because he is getting out on his own and trying not to live in his father's shadow.
Diddy made his name as an East Coast rapper. He lives in New York and has been a staple of that city for much of his professional life, so for his son to travel across the country shows that he wants to do things on his own.
UCLA needs to do something to get some prestige back after years of failures and disappointments. Perhaps bringing in someone with the name cache of Combs is a sign that things are looking up for the once-proud program.
