5 Reasons Matt Moore Isn't Miami Dolphins' QB of Future
Matt Moore has looked awfully good after taking over for Chad Henne early in the season. He led the Dolphins to a three-game winning streak and has them playing their best football of the season.
He has limited his turnovers, while consistently throwing for touchdowns and building a good rapport with his receivers. He should definitely be considered as the future quarterback for the Dolphins, right?
Not so fast.
Even though Moore has been playing extremely well, he doesn't answer the Dolphins' need for a franchise quarterback. Miami has dealt with too many veteran quarterbacks in recent years and should move on from Matt Moore.
Let's look at five reasons why Matt Moore shouldn't be the Dolphins' quarterback of the future.
No Star Potential
1 of 5Matt Moore has been a more than solid replacement this year for the Miami Dolphins. He has played mistake-free football and has been playing like a decent starter in the NFL. However, Miami is looking for a quarterback that can take the keys to the franchise and be able to lead it for the next 10-15 years.
Moore has proven that he can be a serviceable quarterback but he has no star potential or ability to be the franchise quarterback.
Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wants to put people in the stands and will be looking for the next best young quarterback to entertain the fan base and give everyone the exiting offense they have been wanting for years.
While it is almost certain Miami will draft a franchise quarterback, Moore can be the starter in the near future before handing the rookie the keys to the offense. He will provide good advice and give the rookie an opportunity to sit out the first year and learn what it takes to be a quarterback in the NFL.
New Regime Equals New Quarterback
2 of 5With Tony Sparano already having one foot out of the door, the Miami Dolphins will most likely sign a new head coach for next year. It might also be a possibility that they get rid of Jeff Ireland and hire a new general manager.
As in most cases, a new regime means a new quarterback. New coaches want to develop their own young quarterback and mold him to be the future of the franchise. Miami's case will not be any different.
This year's class has some quality franchise quarterbacks that will probably take Moore's job in the near future if Miami indeed lets Sparano go. No matter what coach the Dolphins decide to hire, they will not stick with Matt Moore as the long-time starter.
Dolphins Need Someone That Can Run the Offense for a Long Time
3 of 5No matter how you look at it, Matt Moore is not a franchise quarterback. The Dolphins are in dire need of a quarterback that can lead the team for a long time and have been unable to find one since Dan Marino retired in 1999. Sixteen starting quarterbacks have come, and 15 quarterbacks have gone. Moore will be the 16th to go.
Moore will most definitely be welcomed to back up the new quarterback that Miami brings in but will not compete with him for long. Like I said before, Moore can take a new quarterback under his wing and show him the ropes; but Moore will eventually have to step aside and let the rookie take over.
Miami needs a quarterback that can give them quality years and stability at the position like Peyton Manning has given the Colts, Tom Brady and the Patriots, Drew Brees and the Saints, etc.
Unable to Display His Starting Ability in Carolina
4 of 5Matt Moore was given the opportunity to be a franchise quarterback with the Carolina Panthers last year. He lost the battle with Jimmy Clausen and was not re-signed by the Panthers last offseason. The Panthers don't have the same talent on the field that Miami has, but Cam Newton has been able to shine with the little talent they have.
Moore was inefficient as well as highly inconsistent in his stint with the Panthers. He did not look anything like a franchise quarterback should look and that probably took a hit on his career. He has demonstrated that he can be a quality backup but a franchise quarterback he is not.
If you lose your starting job to a rookie named Clausen, I'm not sure there's a spot on any team as a franchise quarterback.
Needs to Win More Games to Prove Himself
5 of 5Matt Moore has definitely earned all the praise he has received the last month. However, to be a franchise quarterback in this league, you have to consistently win. The three games that the Dolphins have won were against below-average teams. They were close to beating the Dallas Cowboys in Thanksgiving, but a franchise quarterback finds a way to win that game.
It is possible that Moore can be the starter next year even if the Dolphins draft a quarterback early in the draft. He will have the rest of this season and possibly all of next year to prove that he can be a consistent starter in this league and earn a starting job.
Whether he does earn one or not, Moore has proven that he can be a good backup; but he can't provide a future for a franchise.
