Urban Meyer: Renewed Recruiting Effort Will Outfit OSU for Success
It is overzealous to consider Urban Meyer an SEC killer, but he will certainly be an Ohio State savior—and that will begin with recruiting.
On Monday afternoon, Ohio State introduced their newest head coach. You may have heard of him. His name is Urban Meyer and he just delivered his first press conference for the Buckeyes.
There were two things that could be gleaned from this otherwise rather dull event (considering the momentous occasion). First, Meyer is rather fond of quarterback Braxton Miller. He did everything in his power to restrain himself from ripping off his shirt and exposing the "Braxton for Life" chest tattoo that I assume he must have.
Second, Meyer has an extreme amount of pride in and puts a lot of emphasis on recruiting. For most coaches, recruiting can be a blessing or a curse. Students make their own decisions based on what they want their student life to contain.
Meyer is a special case, though. His name is a beacon for students hungry for the spotlight and for success. While other coaches meet in family rooms across the nation and talk about what can be expected, Meyer has the rare ability to dole that information out just by his mere introduction.
"Hi, I'm Urban Meyer."
That, right there, causes a wave of images to flood student-athletes' minds. And believe me, those thoughts will be in the forefront of the minds of top recruits all over the place.
Most importantly, though, it will happen in Ohio once again. The exodus of strong, fast and talented players to the SEC giants will slow dramatically as the scandals that rocked OSU for the past year wash away.
They will be replaced by the promise that Meyer offers as a head coach. I am not about to guarantee that Meyer will be as successful as he was at Florida. It is too hard to win titles and you can't simply guarantee such things.
However, I am fully confident that the Buckeyes' recruitment efforts became much easier today—the moment Urban Meyer took over as the head coach and became the face of Ohio State football.
