Chelsea vs. Liverpool: Complete Preview, Live Stream, Start Time and Schedule

Tim DanielsNov 28, 2011

Just nine days after their last meeting, Chelsea and Liverpool will battle at Stamford Bridge once again. Both teams will be attempting to earn a spot in the Carling Cup semifinals on short rest after playing Premiership fixtures over the weekend.

The Reds were able to secure all three points on Nov. 20 thanks to a late goal from Glen Johnson, who spent time with Chelsea earlier in his career. Maxi Rodriguez opened the scoring for Liverpool and Daniel Sturridge tied it for the Blues before Johnson's 87th-minute strike.

Since both teams played so recently, the lineups will probably be juggled by both managers in an attempt to field a strong team while also resting some key players. Chelsea's John Terry will miss the game due to suspension.

Betting Odds: Chelsea -130, Liverpool +340, Draw +245

Player To Watch for Chelsea: M Josh McEachran

McEachran is expected to draw the start like he has in two previous Carling Cup games. The 18-year-old Englishman has shown some nice potential in limited playing time and non-league matches provide players like him with a platform to show how much progress they've made.

Player To Watch for Liverpool: F Craig Bellamy

Following the death of Gary Speed, Bellamy was excused from Liverpool's lineup on Sunday to mourn his friend. He'll be back on the pitch against Chelsea and will be called upon to generate some early scoring chances. He's scored one goal in two Carling Cup appearances this season.

Key Matchup: Kenny Dalglish vs. Andre Villas-Boas

Since both teams will be utilizing makeshift starting XIs, both managers will need to be in constant communication with their players to ensure there are no lapses. A timely substitution could turn out to be the difference in what should be another close game.

What They're Saying

Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea's assistant manager under Villas-Boas, continues to reaffirm the club's desire of winning the Carling Cup (via Chelseafc.com).

"

“From our first game in the competition, you could see we set out to win it. It's a way of winning a cup and can also give a positive momentum if you win a trophy in that part of the season,” he said.

“The success under Luca [Vialli] gave the team real belief and momentum, it was a real positive effect to go on and win the Cup Winners' Cup, and finish the season well.”

"

The timing of this match has been a constant topic of discussion for both teams. Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said he'll need to make some tough lineup decisions because of the quick turnaround and isn't happy about it (via Liverpoolfc.tv).

"

"48 hours is a bit irresponsible for the people who've organized the dates of the matches. It's not just us, it's Man City.

"To ask any team or any players to play two games of high intensity in 48 hours is a bit of a joke. I don't know why the PFA don't come in and say something about it – it's their players. For me it's difficult to understand why they don't come out and say something. Or do they agree with it?”

"
