College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Recruits and Classes Experts Love Too Much
People disagree about everything in life—including recruiting. Some people like certain prospects more than others; others like particular recruiting classes more than others.
For this read, I'm going to give you a couple of recruiting classes and prospects which other recruiting followers, in my opinion, like too much. Overrated, overhyped—whatever term you want to use—here they are.
Let's get started.
5. Trey Williams, RB
1 of 5I love Trey Williams' talents and am a big fan of the 5'8", 180-pound jitterbug. He's quick, explosive, stronger than many think and very agile. I think he will be a great luxury back and "jack-of-all-trades" offensive weapon for Texas A&M.
But that's the thing—I only see Williams as a luxury back and not an every-down RB. I just don't put as much stock into luxury backs as I do into cowbell runners.
I think Scout.com has him too high at the No.11 overall player in the country.
4. Arizona State's Recruiting Class
2 of 5I've been saying this for some time now: I don't feel any pizazz from ASU's class. They have 24 pledges, which is certainly good, but...
Most of the players are 3-star commits and the top prospect is QB T.J. Millweard, a tall gunslinger with a solid skill set.
In my opinion, this is not a Top 25 class in most years.
3. Jarron Jones, DT/OT
3 of 5I like Jones very much. But Rivals has this guy all the way down in the 60s. Scout has him inside their Top 25 as a 5-star recruit.
Jones is committed to Notre Dame and is a good DT. Many are now saying there is a chance he could play LT.
I'm just not sure he's a 5-star guy as a DT.
2. Zach Banner, OL
4 of 5Banner, in my opinion, is a right tackle. He struggles with speed and quickness as a pass protector—issues a left tackle prospect simply cannot have.
He needs to short-set mostly to be able to latch his big and heavy hands onto a defender and win with strength. He's very athletic for his size, but I'm not sure he's a LT.
Having him in the 30's is rich for my blood by Rivals; I think he belongs in the 50s or 60s.
1. Ohio State's Recruiting Class
5 of 5I know Ohio State received the desired pledge from 5-star DE prospect Adolphus Washington. But they don't have the 14th-best recruiting class in the country, as Scout.com believes.
Seven out of their 16 commitments are 4-star or higher recruits, which is good—especially for a school that had so much coaching uncertainty.
But it's questionable as to whether Brionte Dunn will indeed stick with his commitment, and the bottom portion of the class is not impressive by any means.
