Urban Meyer to Ohio State: Why the NCAA Should Be Concerned Over His Hiring

Randy ChambersNov 28, 2011

Well, the news that has taken over the college football world for the last week or so has finally been confirmed. Urban Meyer is now the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

This is great news for the university as it gives them a proven head coach that will put this program back on top. He has a winning track record everywhere he's gone and is one of the top recruiters in the country.

Needless to say this is the last 6-6 season you'll see at Ohio State for a long time.

It's also a win for Urban Meyer as he is returning home since he is originally from the state of Ohio. He gets to once again coach a prestigious program that is currently in the middle of a watered-down Big Ten conference. He should be able to go in and win right away as he already has his spread-option quarterback in Braxton Miller.

The reported seven-year $40 million contract isn't bad either.

This deal is good for both parties but it may not be good for the NCAA. In fact, they should be very concerned as they already have two black eyes and another incident could put the NCAA down for the count.

Ohio State is already in the middle of a scandal involving players and former players receiving tattoos for memorabilia. It caused several players to be suspended and eventually their coach to step down as he knew about it but failed to report anything.

The school also vacated their 2010 season, forfeited its 2011 Sugar Bowl payment and put themselves on a two-year probation period.

Urban Meyer was a winner at Florida, winning two national championships and helping Tim Tebow earn a Heisman. But he also is known for his players being arrested as well.

There were 30 arrests that involved a total of 27 players during his six years at the University of Florida.

That's quite a lot and can't be a coincidence. It seems like it's more of a lack of control over his players. I know coaches can't control everything players do at all times but that's nearly an arrest for every two victories at Florida under his watch.

"

"I try to evaluate everything about our program," Meyer said about the arrests. "I'm real upset about that. After a while, enough is enough. If there's something we can improve on, we're certainly looking into that. It's like if our graduation stinks, then we've got to improve that. If there are other issues in a program that's our job to get it better. People making stupid mistakes, that's something we've got to correct."

"

Meyer can't have history repeat itself as he is entering a program where everything is magnified by 100. He has to get control of this program quickly before things could possibly turn ugly.

The NCAA is dealing with a ton of scandals right now, from Miami to Penn State. Any more incidents at Ohio State could push the NCAA over the edge.

The NCAA has to be concerned about the hire.
