BCS Bowl Predictions: Oklahoma State Will Beat Stanford in Fiesta Bowl Shootout
Oklahoma State and Stanford are on a crash course for an exciting, high-scoring Fiesta Bowl matchup.
If the Cowboys beat in-state rival Oklahoma this Saturday, an offensive lover's dream game will be set.
Oklahoma State is the second-highest scoring team in the nation, putting up an absurd 49.8 points per game. Stanford is close behind in fifth place, averaging 43.6 points per contest.
Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden might be having the best season of any quarterback in college football. The 28-year-old senior is third in the nation in passing yards (4,111) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (34).
Although Andrew Luck has almost 1,000 yards fewer than Weeden, he has one more TD pass on the season. Luck has been No. 1 on NFL draft boards for two full years now, and a shootout against Weeden will be his final chance to impress scouts against a live defense.
Luck has a couple solid targets in Griff Whalen and Coby Fleener, but neither is on the level of Cowboys wide receiver Justin Blackmon.
Blackmon is the best receiver in the nation and will be a top-10 pick this spring. He is fifth in the country in receptions (103), 11th in receiving yards (1,241) and tied for third in touchdown catches (15).
Both teams also have suspect defenses, meaning that the scoreboard will be lighting up all day.
Oklahoma State has given up 30-plus points to lackluster teams like Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulsa, so I'm assuming Luck will have some success. And Stanford just gave up 53 points to Oregon earlier this month, so the Cowboys should be able to do something similar.
If this game happens, it will be a shootout of epic proportions. However, at the end of the day, I trust Oklahoma State's defense just a tiny bit more than Stanford's.
Prediction: Oklahoma State 55, Stanford 48
