BCS Rankings: IF LSU Loses to Georgia, What Will the BCS Top 5 Look Like?
With one week of college football games remaining, the BCS rankings are almost set. However, an upset win by Georgia over LSU would cause some changes.
LSU proved this week that it is the best team in the country right now. After facing a 14-0 deficit early, the Tigers came back and ended up defeating No. 3 Arkansas in a rout.
Many believe that even with a loss, LSU will remain in position to play for the national championship. Still, there are numerous one-loss teams ready to take a spot if given the opportunity.
Can one of these teams jump high enough in the BCS or are the standings set in stone?
5. Virginia Tech
1 of 5Virginia Tech keeps winning games, but the team will not get any respect due to the lack of elite competition it is facing.
This weekend's rivalry games did not help the Hokies at all, with Georgia Tech and Clemson each losing to state rivals.
The only ranked team that Virginia Tech defeated was Georgia Tech, who now stands at 8-4. The loss to Clemson did not look too bad a few weeks ago, but now the Tigers have lost three of four to end the regular season.
Even a rematch win in the ACC Championship Game will not impress voters enough to move the Hokies any higher in the rankings.
4. Stanford
2 of 5Stanford might be the fan favorite to play in the championship game, but like Virginia Tech, the schedule will not be impressive enough to move up in the rankings.
The Cardinal are hurt the most by the fact that USC is ineligible for the Coaches' Poll and Harris Poll. The Trojans are now up to No. 9 in the AP Poll this week, and this would be viewed as a very quality win by Stanford.
Unfortunately due to the terms of the probation, USC cannot receive votes and Stanford is suffering the most.
The loss to Oregon keeps Stanford out of the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game, so the Cardinal will have no further opportunity to impress the voters.
3. Oklahoma State
3 of 5Oklahoma State still has an opportunity to pass Alabama in the rankings, but it will need to put on quite a performance against Oklahoma this weekend.
The Cowboys average almost 50 points per game, but the loss to 6-5 Iowa State might be the nail in the coffin for the team's championship hopes, even if the game went to double-overtime.
Wins over Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas and Kansas State will make an impressive resume, but it cannot compete with the wins of LSU if the Tigers lose in the SEC Championship Game.
It will be an uphill battle, but next week's games give Oklahoma State the opportunity to still play its way into the national title game.
2. LSU
4 of 5Right now, LSU is the best team in college football.
The Tigers have defeated the No. 2 team in the country once (Alabama) and the No. 3 team in the country twice (Arkansas and Oregon). They are undefeated and only once has the game been closer than 13 points.
The question is if LSU loses to Georgia, has the team done enough to remain in the BCS National Championship Game? The answer is yes.
If one objectively looks at each team's performance for the season, there is no way any one-loss team could be better than LSU.
There would most likely be a drop in the rankings to the No. 2 spot, but there is little chance LSU falls all the way to No. 3 in the BCS standings.
1. Alabama
5 of 5The regular season for Alabama is done. Now it is just a game of waiting and praying.
If LSU wins the SEC Championship Game as expected, Alabama should remain as the No. 2 team in the country. Based on what we have seen from the entire season, Alabama is the second-best team with the second-best wins and the least-embarrassing loss.
The defense alone is one of the best in college football history, with tons of NFL potential on that side of the football.
In the unlikely circumstance that Georgia does defeat LSU, it would only be fitting that Alabama moves up to take the top spot in the human and computer polls.
It seems that no matter what LSU does, fans will be seeing an SEC rematch in the national championship game.
