BCS Rankings Week 14: Predicting Who Gets Screwed in the Latest BCS Rankings

Andrew PreglerNov 26, 2011

As the BCS madness continues on, it is inevitable that several teams will be screwed over by a screwy system. The current BCS rankings are not projected to change too much thanks to minimal upsets, but that does not mean certain teams will be happy Sunday night.

For these five teams, they are going to each be screwed in different ways. Some teams will see others leapfrog them. Others will not move at all even with impressive wins over quality opponents. Some will even watch as other conference teams who will not play in the championship game are ranked above them.

If your team is on the list, just know that other fans feel your pain as this system continues to complicate the NCAA far more than we would like.

No. 3 Arkansas

1 of 5

The Razorbacks are going to be screwed by merit of their horrible showing against LSU. Stanford fell five places after being rocked by Oregon, and after the showing LSU put on versus Arkansas, I would venture the fall would be at least the same.

Looking at the rankings, based on how every other team fared, it would not be surprising if Arkansas fell eight spots to No. 10.

With this drop, the Razorbacks would finish their season going from a guaranteed BCS at-large bid to praying for a normal finish of the season to ensure they will make it to a BCS bowl. Arkansas would just be another team that would fall to the BCS lose-late death curse.

No. 5 Virginia Tech

2 of 5

The Hokies will be screwed over by nature of the not moving at all.

With Arkansas losing, one would think that all other teams between No. 3 and where the Razorbacks fall (projected 10) would move up a slot, right? Wrong.

Unfortunately for Virginia Tech, instead of moving up to No. 4 in the country and being a few upsets away from a national title, they will be stuck at No. 5 because Stanford will leap frog them into the four spot. The Cardinals' win over 21st-ranked Notre Dame looks all the more impressive compared to Virginia Tech's win over Virginia, and the Cardinal have Andrew Luck, guaranteed to gain more media votes.

Sorry, Virginia Tech. Settle for the BCS game and show the world you can compete with LSU.

No. 8 Houston

3 of 5

Houston will be screwed over in every way possible here.

First, they will be screwed out of a guaranteed BCS game because they finish below Boise State in the rankings. Only one non-BCS conference team can wrap up the automatic qualifying bid, meaning Houston is at the mercy of the voters to keep them in the Top 10.

Furthermore, don't expect Houston to move much at all. Unlike in past weeks, the Cougars did not blow out Tulsa in the way they have other opponents, meaning voters unsure of Houston could very well hold back and place Arkansas ahead of Houston or even move Oregon ahead of them.

If Houston moves up any spots, it will be a minor miracle. Their best hope is to blowout Southern Miss on national TV and show the world that they are just as good as anyone, in hopes of jumping ahead of the one loss Boise State to snatch the automatic qualifying bid for non-BCS conference schools, even though they are the undefeated team with a Heisman candidate.

No. 13 Georgia

4 of 5

Georgia is going to be more than likely ranked just below Arkansas, even though the Bulldogs are going to be the team competing for the conference title and the Razorbacks were decimated by LSU.

Georgia won their rivalry game against Georgia Tech on the road, but it will be more than likely overlooked. Georgia is perhaps the second hottest team in college football behind LSU right now, as they have not lost since the second week of the season.

During this stretch, the Bulldogs have impressed everyone and saved Mark Richt's job for yet another year. But the rankings will not reflect this great streak. If the Bulldogs do not defeat LSU, they will more than likely finish below Arkansas, even though they technically finished second in their conference.

No. 16 Wisconsin

5 of 5

The Badgers are going to be screwed by merit of their own inconsistency coming back to haunt them.

The Badgers, before Michigan State, were considered by many to have an outside shot at the national title thanks to the domination of Russell Wilson. However, after the crazy Hail Mary loss to Sparty, Wisconsin fell off the table.

This week, in a battle for the Leaders divisional crown and berth in the Big Ten championship game, the Badgers pulled out their inner Honey Badger and stomped Penn State in a noncompetitive 45-7 win. Unfortunately for them, even though they have defeated more quality teams by wider margins, that one Hail Mary will probably keep the Badgers below Michigan State in the rankings.

Sparty is 14th in the rankings, so the moral of the story is: Wisconsin just put on the second or third most impressive win of the week and will move up one freaking spot.

Sorry Badgers. Feel free to go Honey Badger all over the BCS office; the rest of the world will applaud you.
