Robert Griffin III Injury Video: Heisman Candidate Leaves Game After Scary Hit
Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III was on the receiving end of a scary hit vs. Texas Tech. He laid on the field for awhile before leaving the game and did not return for the second half.
The video is embedded above.
Griffin had completed seven of his 11 passes for 106 yards and a touchdown before the hit. He had also run for 57 yards and a TD. It was just the latest in an impressive season of outings for the Bears' junior signal caller.
Coming into the game, he was connecting on 73 percent of his throws and averaging over 400 total yards per game. Even though Baylor had suffered three losses, they all game against elite teams and Griffin made an impression on voters anyway.
The hit was delivered by Texas Tech's Cornelius Douglas.
At first glance it would appear to be a dirty hit, especially since Griffin stayed down. However, after watching the slow-motion replay (near the end of video), it seems like Douglas started the tackling motion before Griffin was fully committed to his slide.
As Douglas follows through, his elbow catches Griffin, whose head proceeds to whip back and hit the ground. The converted wide receiver was flagged for a personal foul on the play, so the referees deemed the hit to come late for what it's worth.
Griffin returned to the sidelines after halftime, but Nick Florence came in to play quarterback. It was the backup's first playing time of the season.
It's a tough turn of events for Griffin, who is running out of chances to impress voters. At least it appears he has avoided major injury, although more precautionary tests will likely occur after the shootout ends.
Baylor hosts Texas next week. Seeing the Bears superstar walking the sidelines gives hope he might be available, but the coaching staff will likely play it safe with him.
