Week 13 College Football Picks: 3 Ranked Teams That Will Fall Hard

Ryan RudnanskyNov 24, 2011

There's nothing that leaves a sour taste in the mouth like being a ranked team and getting knocked down a notch at the end of the regular season.

Three ranked teams in particular will fight good fights in Week 13 of the college football season, but ultimately fall in the end.

Here are three ranked teams that will fall hard.

3. Georgia Tech (No. 23)

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets beat then-No. 5 Clemson on Oct. 29, but they've since regressed, losing to Virginia Tech and winning by just a touchdown against a 3-8 Duke team.

The Yellow Jackets face No. 13 Georgia on Saturday, a team that has won nine straight games since losing its first two games of the season to Boise State and South Carolina.

Georgia destroyed then-No. 20 Auburn, 45-7, on Nov. 12 and have a balanced team, averaging 34.3 points per game while allowing just 17.8 points per game.

Georgia's defense and Georgia Tech's lack thereof will be the difference.

2. Auburn (No. 24)

I'd like to think Auburn is going to continue the historic Iron Bowl with a hard-fought game, but there's nothing to suggest it will even be close against No. 2 Alabama.

Auburn's defense has been a weak point all season long and the loss of defensive tackle Nick Fairley has really reared its ugly head as the Tigers are giving up 4.6 yards per carry this season.

That's not good news against Trent Richardson and the Crimson Tide.

1. Arkansas (No. 3)

As much as I want Arkansas to beat No. 1 LSU (which would expose the BCS system for the weakling that it is), I just don't see it in the cards, even with the returns of defensive ends Jake Bequette and Tenarius Wright.

Arkansas does not have an elite rush defense (giving up 4.3 yards per carry) and that will ultimately be the Razorbacks' undoing, as LSU's running game will be too difficult to stop.

The Arkansas offense will be better than expected, however, and this should be a close game.
